It's OPEN! - To every form of access EXCEPT road. Boat (Personal or Water Taxi available "Totally Tarawera"), Kayak, Walking (from Lake Okataina), etc. Campground is very spacious, just before Christmas/New Years grass is mowed. Can book via DOC website. Beware, birdsong + cicadas in the mornings is sometimes deafening... Been going for nearly 20 years (by boat the last 5), loved every second!

Where I love to come to rejuvenate my body and soul and reflect on how thankful I am for what I have and who I am.

The lake is magnificent. We did the walk to Tarawera Falls and it was amazing.

Absolutely worth the stay, if only it was managed properly. The facilities, as in the toilets, were a total disgrace!! Dirty, full, rubbish and sawdust buckets empty with rubbish in them. All sanitisers were empty. You are now expected to pay full rates for this camp, so it’s not too much to ask that it is managed correctly. We stayed 5 nights and not once did we see a caretaker and this was over a busy weekend. We were not the only campers disgusted with the facilities. Other than that, it is a great place to camp with plenty to do if you are adventuress. I do hope it improves, as it is one of our favorite...

We didn't camp, but were here for a couple of hours after doing the Tarawera falls track. We used the toilets (lovely & clean), & swam in the outlet. Cool, but not freezing. What wonderful clear water - it was a lovely aqua colour, & you could see the bottom. It was fairly swift in places, so I wouldn't let little ones do more than cool their toes - & that with me hanging on to them! We'd...
