It's a FREE campground with the cleanest backcountry long drop I have ever had the pleasure of using. It didn't even smell, who is this unicorn? Plenty of space for tents and several fire pits (find your own firewood). Bring your own water or walk about 15 mins to the stream (on Tree Trunks Gorge Track). Two lovely walking tracks from the campground - Tree Trunks Gorge and Pillars of Hercules. Close to Urchin and Umukarikari Tracks. The campground is 20 mins on a gravel road, barely any potholes, surprising even for a forest road.

Campsite is at the end of long gravel road, don't get distracted by the small campsite sign right at the entrance. Great campground with one toilet - no toilet paper and a few places to make fire. Has a few tracks close by - Urchin & Umakarikari tracks which are so worth the climb. Tree trunk gorge track is excellent forest walk too. Pillars of Hercules not so great view at the end, better view of gorge on top of the road.

Small campsite with some private areas, long drop, fire pits & a couple of nice tracks to walk or bike. Lovely and quiet with plenty of bird life chat to fall asleep too & wake you up. When heading to the campsite use Google Maps until Kaimanawa Road then follow the road signs after entering Kaimanawa Forest. Ignore the first campsite sign to the left and continue following the signs all the way to the top.

Beautiful spot to camp. Bit confusing to get there from the main road, ignore the initial campsite sign on your left and keep following the road for 10mins or so the campground is then well signposted after the initial confusion. There is plenty of space, beautiful surroundings, nearby hikes and mountain bike tracks, a long drop with a byo toilet paper requirement, a couple of fire pits and some picnic tables. We heard and saw kakas and Kereru flying overhead. Beautiful clear sky overnight. Bring your insect repellent. Lots of tree fall on the road in and the tree trunk gorge track so...

We stayed just a night, will definitely be back. We're in a 7metre 2WD Sprinter and took the road slow, didn't have any issues as right now it's in good condition. Some of the time it is very thin though, wouldn't want to meet another us coming the other way. Campsite was lovely, not huge but we found a nice private spot. A lot of hunting going on when we were there. Had a fire, was lovely. No phone signal. Find us Insta if you're...
