For a free doc campsite this place is a gem, we went last week in mid November and it was just us and one other group staying there. There's an open hut with a picnic table and fireplace as well as a bathroom, the river that there's a walkway access to has whio nesting sites which is also really awesome even though we didn't see any, i will definitely stay here again if I ever find myself in the area :)

Free campsite, fantastic location nearby Tongariro Alpine Crossing start. Cabin with fireplace, picknick table and toilet. Great views!

Great campsite but toilets could be looked after a bit more as the smell was a bit too much when we were there in March

It was free, so, there’s that. It’s really just a gravel parking lot - very inhospitable to tents. The outhouse didn’t event have a toilet paper holder, so it’s not just that they ran out of TP, they just didn’t seem to ever have any intention of providing it. Like all NZ campgrounds we stayed at, the camp sites would benefit from more space and privacy between them and a picnic table and fire pit for...

We went to Waikoko Valley Campsite twice: once to have our very late lunch and another time when unfortunately we couldn't stay as there was fire in the woods in the neighborhood. Cannot really say how's sleeping there but the place looked peaceful, there was even a sink but very small toilet (longdrop). There's no signal but the birds make for it, just listen...
