Remote camp site on the grounds of an historic hut. Has an emergency clean water tap although it is recommended you boil and filter the water if drinking etc. Long drop toilet in a couple of places over the grounds both sides of road and they are kept clean and tidy when we visited. Short walk to a loop track summit lookout and in other direction over to the river. Drive a few minutes north and you come across what is called a student engineered suspension bridge crossing the Acheron River. Road from Hanmer starts steep on Jollies Pass and a little rough but does smooth out although very dusty. Cross one small Ford to Acheron and the road is suitable for 2WD. Lovely old building used as accommodation by weary travellers on their 6 day journey from Nelson to Christchurch and now the area still being enjoyed by present day travellers wanting to get into the high country. However, I was deeply concerned about the state of the area. Even though there are signs of some wildling pine spraying....DOC seems to have lost the battle.
