My little hidden gem only under 2 hours from Christchurch. I have been here 3 times now and yes, the sandflies and bees spoil any resemblance of any fun if you wanted to venture from the tent. I know this and now come fully prepared. Sometimes putting up a tent has to be done in stages - seeking shelter in the hut away from the bugs till they settle down. Thank God for the shelter as this place would not be as appealing. I spend most of my time in there just reflecting on life. Luckily the last time I went (March) I was surprised how little sandfly's there were. More Bees than sandflies this time which I can handle. It left me more time to explore up the road and further this time. I just love this place away from people, but I do hear from the occasional tramper that stops by that the hut can get quite busy. Read moreBeautiful spot to wake up in. I used it as a stopover point on the way south as it's only a short drive along a gravel road off the main highway. Very basic facilities as it's just a shelter; long drop and a roof over your head. There are slatted seats that are just about wide enough to sleep on. No table and NO WATER (however, there is the creek running close by but it is a working station so water should be boiled).
