An extraordinary display of west coast hospitality
I have not stayed at this Hotel but my experience with the proprietors racist bellowing would certainly dissuade me from doing so. 2 Weeks ago while driving past our child felt car sick and we stopped to let him get some fresh air. While he was standing in some bushes to the side of the entrance to this hotel, out popped Stephen yelling at us to get off his property. When my wife asked if he would like to come and see that there was no vomit he declined and told us to go back to our own country, aye, there’s the welcoming west coast spirit right there. That was a tricky call for us as we were already in our own country, like Stephen, we are kiwis who also did a bit of time overseas. We told him we were from Dunedin and he told us it was typical bloody kiwi behaviour. Oh dear Stephen, that’s a pity, which group of people do you like given that people not from here and from here are on your shitlist? If I drew a Venn diagram of people not from here and people from here, those not in one of the groups is a rare find.
Mate, when a kid is crook in a car you need to pull over, it’s pretty simple. When it’s raining like it was (142mm in 24hrs) a bit of chunder will wash away in a couple of minutes. I imaging that your dogs fertilize the property too, it’s one of those things and the foiliage about certainly looks verdant and well fertilized. Remember too, there was no actual spew and he was a good distance from your drive way and in the bushes. But hey, thanks for the lesson in west coast hospitality, touted on your website. Do you tell all your guests to go back to their own countries or is that a prize for passing children who displease you or even just as a checkout reminder for what the guests should do next? Look its unlikely that we as a family would ever have been guests but man you have also made sure I will spread the word far and wide to my travel colleagues that a hotel proprietor who yells go back to your own country then typical bloody kiwi is unlikely to be:
A good host for overseas guests A good host for homegrown guests
Perhaps Stephen, you would be better off tinkering with your mountain bikes, snapping pics and doing your sparky work while leaving the cheery faced PR work to others. Better yet, maybe keep your thoughts on where people are from inside your head, that would seem to be the best example of west coast hospitality. Feel free to come visit Dunedin, we are more than happy to show you about, it’s a lovely place and we welcome people...
Read moreNEW TRIP-Jan 2025: After the first year that we stayed at Breakers, we enjoyed it so much that we decided to make it a yearly trip. We've now stayed in all four of their rooms and have decided that we love them all. (We're already booked for 2026!) Jan's warm hospitality and attention to detail continues, and Stephen's beautiful images still showcase the region. During this most recent stay, we realised that one of the things that we enjoy so much is breakfast around the table in the main house with the other guests. This year there were visitors from France, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and the USA. Despite llving in NZ, we often learn so much more about the region from Jan as she shares her suggestions of things to see and do with the other guests. Our visit was one of R&R, but also included walks on the beautiful beach and a swim down by the waterfall. And surely, as evidence of the new photos posted, Breakers must experience some of the best sunsets on the West Coast of the South Island. We're already looking forward to our next visit!
I love to travel and moved to NZ about 14 years ago. I've been fortunate to visit and stay in many places over the years. The Breakers may be the best I've experienced in NZ. The location is stunning, the property is very special, and the accomodation was so comfortable. Local art in our room made it even more special. We enjoyed a two day stay just after New Year's Day to relax and unwind. There couldn't have been a better place for our break. Jan is an incredible host, full of local knowledge and with such a lovely way about her that the guests just feel at home. Breakfast was delicious and served in the dining area with another great view. (Jan even provided me with gluten-free toast on request.) We also really enjoyed the chance to chat with other guests. An added bonus is that we could order a homemade pizza after one long day. This was brought to us by Jan on our veranda one evening. My partner and I both agreed that we'll return for another stay, and I feel that Breakers will make a great solo 'retreat' escape for me in the...
Read moreThis time last year we had just returned from our 7th trip to New Zealand and immediately started to plan and book our 8th trip for February 2021. As we planned this trip, yet again, the first accommodation that we booked was Breakers Boutique B&B.
Why? Because in our opinion overall it offers the best holiday destination that we have come across in New Zealand. The views from the room and balcony are truly amazing, you couldn’t wish for a better location overlooking the ocean, watching the sun go down in the evening and waking to the sound of the waves in the morning. With their ‘own’ beach below, ideal for an early morning or evening walk - what more could you ask for? The accommodation is first class and there are excellent choices for breakfast, both cold and hot (being cooked to order) using local produce.
All the information that Jan supplies on the journey to and from Breakers is second to none. Jan and Stephen’s knowledge of the surrounding area and the West Coast is truly remarkable, they not only know all the walks, tracks and rides in detail but in all cases have sampled them all. Even if you are going further afield, either north or south, they will discuss the locations and also distribute detailed information for your onward trip.
Unfortunately for us COVID had other thoughts for the world and we had to cancel our 2021 trip but when we return for our 8th visit next year, Breakers Boutique B&B will once again be the first booking we make.
This destination for anyone travelling on the West Coast of the South Island should...
