We have always bypassed Haast on the way north or south on our many trips to NZ, but this time, we decided to stay at Haast Beach.||We were not disappointed. The owner was very welcoming and helpful; the motel unit we were in was the last at the front. Luckily, other guests realised they needed to walk on the path rather than on the pebbles passed our unit to go back and forth to the laundry. :)||There appears to be some very nice looking newer two storey family units beside the standard motel unit we were in. The unit was compact but comfortable, and warm. Our unit had the kitchenette with a window so great for more light or ventilationif you needed it. The screen on the front window was great to stop the infamous black flies and still allow ventilation. The bed was comfortable, and the kitchenette was well equipped with stainless steel cookware and a ceramic cooktop. My only bugbear was the plastic kettle, as I prefer stainless steel kettles - but that's a personal thing. Lovely personal touches, nice quality amenities in the variety of teas, coffees, biscuits and lollies, and bathroom supplies. Access through their property across the road to the beach was great for a sunset walk.||If you didn't want to prepare your own meal, eating places were not that far away as we've driven more in a city to go to a restaurant - from 3km to 6km.||Apart from the road traffic and a guest in the unit beside us with his coughing and chatting - which all seemed to stop about 10pm - it was a very quiet lovely sleep disturbed only by the soothing sounds of crashing waves on the incoming tide. ||Enjoyed our stay and will now venture this way...

Read moreStayed one night here in the small but lovely town of Haast. Lovely room, very clean, had everything you could want and all interior items looked pretty new. Believe it or not really appreciated the heated towel rail to dry the towels after a shower and the blow heater as it was cold in the bathroom in the morning……and the ceiling fan as…….well….. that certain age!! Very quiet even though on a main road (ha, ha, everywhere very quiet here)! Got to say for us the bed was a little on the firm side, would be nice with a topper pad but was fine as on,y staying the one night. Could cook in the room but we opted for the “Hard Antler Pub” as it scored better on the reviews and although took a while to get served the staff were very friendly and the food was decent quality comfort food, great choice ov venison based meal which were good (great sausage and mash). Walk across the road from the motel, past the sheep, down a small path and onto the most beautiful, remote beach you could find, lots of wonderfully shaped fallen trees lying around the beach just to make it look even nicer. Unfortunately we missed the sunset but would imagine that would be lovely. Had a walk on the beach when we got there and another before we left in the morning, on,y two on there. Also, if a clear, dark night, it would be worth going to do a bit of stargazing, there is a strategically placed dead tree lying there just as you get onto the beach where you can sit and watch the stars and listen to the sea,...
