The DOC run camp was worth the time and effort to use as my base from my stay here. With on-site toilets that were cleaned every day and restocked, it was excellent 👌. I spent 5 nights here, with the usual sign in procedure of camp fees of 10 dollars a night. So make sure you have cash available, no ATM here. Depending what side you enter Kahurangi National Park it's like stepping back in Pre human history, untouched virgin forest and terrain. What tracks you took were immaculate and well maintained. The camp grounds were easy for one nighters or motor homes as there's ample parking lots. But it's best to book 📖 on line to reserve your spot. As there's no rubbish bins make sure to take with you when you leave. Water is on site but always boil as the signage requires you to. As the saying goes it's literally the end of the road Campsite make it as your bucket 🪣 list or places to see...

Beautiful wild camping at the end of the road north from Karamea and at the start of the Heaphy Track. This is one of those places I wish I could take home with me. Flat, hard packed sandy sites with coastal vegetation giving some shelter from the prevailing westerlies. Lots of sites are right on the ocean so you have fantastic views and sunsets and the sound of the ocean to lull you to sleep at night. Definitely no ocean swimming. There are some good short walks close to the camp and best of all, the track over to Scott's Beach gives you a taste of the coastal section of the Heaphy Track. It's easy walking and a good bike ride. Make sure you have insect repellant. The West Coast is very popular with sandflies, particularly if rain...

Absolutely beautiful campsite at the edge of the world.

Unless you want to gift some sacrifices to the Weka gods, make sure you place your rubbish and food high up before going to bed at night! They are sneaky and will wait until 5am to sneak in and steal your loaf of bread.

The campsite features a beautiful beach where you can watch the sun set every night, swimmable river, and a few short walks at the bottom of the Heaphy track. There are some stone tables and firepits which are great for cooking, and the flushable toilets were in good condition and clean. There are water taps but you must boil it before drinking.

A decent amount of sandflies during summer, so don't...
