My wife and I took a self drive touring holiday on South Island New Zealand from the 17th March to the 11th April 2023. Apart from the first 2 nights and the last night where we stayed in a hotel in Christchurch we were self catering and stayed in accommodation that offered cooking facilities. I have reviewed each of the hotel/motels we stayed in. The following reviews cover the accommodation and some of the facilities/visits we made on the trip.|If you would like to view the rest of the reviews please click on my username and all my reviews will be listed.|Days 16and 17 of our self drive tour of South Island March/April 2023|Karamea River Motels. 5 stars|We stayed at the Karamea River Motels on the 30th and 31st of March.|Welcome. We were greeted by Alison, the owner and given a bottle of milk and a map of the area. Alison also gave us details of things to see and do in the area.|Service. We did not need servicing.|Location. The Motel is in an area where there are a number of countryside walks and is not far from the start of The Heapy Long distance Trail. |Comfort. The unit was very large. It consisted of a lounge area with a bed in one corner, a sofa, armchairs, kitchen table and chairs and a large flat screen tv on a stand. There was a separate bedroom with a double and single bed. The bathroom was also quite large with a very nice shower. The unit was suitable for 4 persons. The kitchen area was large with lots of storage space, a hot plate, microwave and kettle. There were a full set of cooking utensils and many plates etc. The decor was fine and there was a large patio window overlooking the garden which to our surprise contained a deer and a highland cow. Apparently these were the owners “pets”|Cleanliness. The unit was very clean as was the bedding.|WiFi. The Wifi was good.|Conclusions. Karamea River Motels is a superb place to stay. If we returned we would stay at this...

I came up to work. Starting at 5am with a full days work (11 hours), I didn’t hear guests in the neighbouring room and they did not comment on my alarm going in the wee hours. I love the tranquility of this location. Calm, relaxing decor with near private garden patio facing the setting sun.
It’s the little details too, blinds over the main door, airing the room before a guest arrives, house keepers are polite and quiet (not disruptive as they set about their tasks), room is very neat and clean, refreshments stocked very day, insect spray for sandflies (this is the West Coast) and accessible guest laundry.
A stroll away from the shops, and a little further more to other establishments (I recommend the Hotel for a meal or refreshments).
I stayed at a resort last time, this place is pure luxury in comparison. Perfect little get away accommodation.

One minor glitch, someone had been in to make up the room while I was out, had unlocked the patio doors and forgot to re-lock them when they left, leaving my room and belongings unsecured for anyone to access.
I only thought to double check when going to sleep. No-one was around to mention it to when I was leaving.
Other than that, would stay again. Would just make sure they don't come in to clean while I'm...
