Best kept secret of New Zealand!|After a busy three weeks travelling around the South Island, we had two magical nights in the Fisherman’s Hut at Lake Heron Station. |Philip and Anne were so welcoming, and passionate about their station and the flora and fauna around them.|The accommodation in our ‘hut’, was first class with everything provided for your luxury stay.| We had booked dinner, bed and breakfast together with a tour of the station. We were not disappointed. Anne delivered our delicious evening meal by 4wd. The lamb was delicious and melt in your mouth, and the chocolate mousse divine. We felt very honoured to be invited into their home for a leisurely breakfast and chat.|We were encouraged to ‘tramp’ around the lake and tracks on the station. Hetty, the Jack Russell, joined us for a row around the lake.|We learnt so much during our tour, how the merino sheep and cattle work within the station landscape. Together with how guests and family enjoy fishing, hunting, tramping, and skiing.|After another delicious meal of salmon and the most scrumptious meringue, we had to leave this very special place and family.|Would highly recommend.|Thank...
Read moreLast year I stayed out at the cottage at Lake Heron and fell in love with the area. It's such a stunning valley surrounded by beautiful mountains with lots of walks and trails and it's great to see it used as a working merino farm. The cottage is modern and cozy and a great escape.||||Came back last weekend for my 30th birthday with friends and stayed up at the New Hut, which is a nice modern kiwi hut, further up the valley with lots of renovations. Definitely need a grunty 4WD to get up there in the autumn or winter especially if there have been rains but lots of fun to be had, has big cozy bunks with proper mattresses and big duvets and pillows, double glazing makes it really warm and there's hot water, full gas kitchen (no oven) and even an outdoor shower, long drop outside, definitely what you wish all huts were like, great views and a perfect place for outdoor lovers and adventurers to base yourself for a few days with friends! No reception so you can get off the grid and back to nature in comfort. Would go back in...
Read moreWe stayed at the New Hut on Lake Heron Station and absolutely loved it. It’s the perfect mix of rustic and luxury. Very comfy bunks with feather pillows and duvets - I wish all bunk rooms were like that! The hut got really toasty thanks to the wood-burning stove and double glazing, with loads of hot water. I even braved an outdoor shower. There were also really nice touches like a wee leather couch, wonderful kitchen table, sheepskins and even a stag’s head on the wall. Being Scottish, I felt very at home....||The stars in the night sky were incredible and only surpassed by the daytime views of the Southern Alps. It’s worth the fairly challenging 4 wheel drive to get there. Luckily, the friends that took us love off-road driving so were happy as larry fording rivers and bouncing over rocky...
