Stunning beachside campsite. Loads of different sized sites on various angles to suit everyone, if you have a smaller vehicle you can drive up to the higher campsites that have an awesome view. Toilet blocks looked nice and clean. Camp host very friendly. My only criticism of the place is the beach is not the greatest for swimming and it’s very loud! It’s an odd beach with waves breaking all over the place. If you are looking for a nice swimming beach try Rarangi or Whites Beach

Awesome location directly on the beach. There are bushes which give shelter during windy times. The facilities are clean and basic (as to expect from a DOC camping). There were some ant problems when we were staying there. So be prepared with some insect repellent. We can really recommend the walk on the beach towards Mussel Point (towards the cliff on the right side. There are dunes of sea shells of more than a meter!

Martells Beach campsite. Arrived and went to the campsite host, really helpful and friendly, he told is the best spot for putting up our tent. The toilet block was clean and even had soap. There is no hot water here but the toilets are flush and there are showers. Overall a great spot for a few days and if you feel up to it there is a walk to the lighthouse that is 3.5 - 4 hours return along the beach.

"Oh no," we said as we drove from Route 1 to Marfells Beach. We felt like we were driving off into nowhere. We found Marfells Beach on a website as "the place" to visit while driving from Picton to Kaikoura. In actuality, the beach is only about 9 kilometers off the main road, but there is NOBODY along the roads on the way back. But, what a beautiful and secluded beach you see when you arrive. When we got there, we parked and ate our lunch right on the beach. The views were stunning. The camp ground looked pretty full, but it was very rustic (i.e., only two toilets). There were people fishing, laying in the sun on the beach, and even a family teaching their daughter how to ride a pony. Next time we go to New Zealand, we are camping and staying at Marfells Beach...

DOC campsite, fees can be paid on arrival or online, first in best dressed situation. Easy access from the highway, the road is unsealed for about 400m before the campsite but is very manageable for all vehicles. Large flat unpowered sites that have direct access to a very pretty swimming beach; there is cold running (non-potable) water, and two ablutions blocks. Plenty of opportunities to explore the area on foot, by car or on the water. We enjoyed our first Christmas Marlborough here very much and will be...
