Expensive but a good place to stay with relatively clean facilities. Toilets and kitchen with gas hobs to prepare your meals. You have to bring your own food as there is no restaurant on the site. You will be sleeping in a dormitory on bank beds. It would be a good idea to bring a pair of earplugs if you can not tolerate snoring. You also need to bring your own sleeping bag as only a mattress is provided. There are no showers, and you need to take your own rubbish with you on the way out. Adam, from Scotland, is one of the ragers of this hut and every evening at 8:00, he gives a briefing about h&s as well as information about the weather and the local flora & fauna which I found very useful. If you can not tolerate snoring and the 'hoi poloi', you can book a guided tour of the Routeburn track, which will cost you a lot more, but it will give you access to the posher hut which is next-door.

Well maintained hut with gas stoves and running water, the ranger here was fantastic (each hut does an evening ranger talk) and put up a high-stakes prize as part of the talk! The views in and around the hut are stunning-particularly at sunset ! A very memorable stay!

Great experience. Neat, clean, tidy and highly equipped compared to other huts we have visited so far. Close to fall, flushed toilet, gas or stove for cooking, water available 24 hours. The ranger onsite highly professional, welcoming and helpful.

Huts in New Zealand are usually containers taken and placed anywhere… far from nice looking. Then you go to the “Great Walks” and they suddenly show off with nicely made wooden huts. I have traveled in many places. This hut is a really nice facility but, as for the rest of the walk, it feels more as a tourist place rather than an actual hut. This is a hotel, not a hut. Gee, they even have gas stoves here… which is something here in NZ you can only find in rich places. I saw people complaining because there is no Wi-Fi… gee, you are in a (supposed to be) hut in the nature, you are here to enjoy nature, not to take picture and post it right away on some social media. Anyway, this is a fine building, what I do not like is that, if you have some experience doing hikes, this place, this walk, makes you understand that “great walks” exist just as money maker, not for...

Very surprised to be asked to review Routeburn Falls hut as no mobile coverage. I did not stay in DOC hut. I was in Ultimate Hikes Lodge. This was the Jewel in the Crown of UH Lodges on Routeburn. Very comfortable, spacious and with excellent facilities. I am a convert to 'Glamping.' After a hard day's walking, often in the wet, it is wonderful to arrive at the lodge. Twin share with on suite, very effective drying room, warm cosy fire, bar with beer and wines and three course dinner cooked for you. Ultimate Hikes did a fantastic job and the three guides that accompanied our group of 21 were superb. Highly recommended and worth...
