Beautiful camping site and walking trails. Basic non powered stands. Some grass stands for tents and some gravel stands for RV'S. Long drop toilets. Basin with hand soap and running water in the summer. Water needs to be boiled before drinking. No running water in winter and can be collected from river. Currents rates of $15 per person per night. Check DOC website for latest rates. Also check weather forecasts as this is an alpine site. Camp site prone to flooding during continues rainfall.

Lake Sylvan track is a largely undiscovered gem. Amazing bird life (we were approached and had our shoelaces pecked by a couple of curious robins on our walk). Lake is a hidden and peaceful place to wet your toes. There were very few people on this track (compared to the routeburn just up the road).

Came end June 2024, breathtaking views, stunning silence and all to ourselves (except for sheep!). Drop toilet open, but running water shut off for the winter. Book online before arrival. Entrance has a short steep section that could get muddy - could be a challenge for a bigger RV.

By the Route Burn (river) with green grass and low shrub dividers, this is a pleasant place to pitch a tent (small or big) or park a van and there's also limited shade so it isn't as hot as some. In the late afternoon it was pleasantly cool in January and there is nearby forest to read a book in or explore too. The two longdrop toilets are concrete block and generous in sizing but a bit smelly. There are additional water taps around the grounds so you don't have to fill up at the toilets.

There are sandflies although we didn't find them particularly bad. There are also birds flitting around and sheep mowing the grass sometimes, so the ground feel alive. In theory the DOC price is $15 or night or person.

It is also the start of the Lake Sylvan track and extensions of that and there is an additional parking area for both day parking and longer term parking.

The road there is dirt and about one kilometer off the road to the Route Burn shelter road, so perhaps 5km from...

Well laid out campsite with individual bays and grassy stretches to put up tents. Two tabs to refill water and wash dishes. A toilet building with two spacious cabins. Luxury compared to Diamond Lake campsite. But... the bridge crossing the river hasn't been replaced yet. There are no instructions in place. From the parking lot climb the ladder over the fence. Follow the stream up to a shallow point where you can cross. Keeping shoes on or take them off - it's your choice. Once across watch out for a small pile of stones. Enter the bush and turn right. Follow the rough tramp for approximately 300 metres where you meet the original broad and well laid out track. DOC, why are you confusing visitors with a signboard that tells to keep off blue and pink marked trails and keep to the orange marked? The track is in most parts marked...
