I’ve honestly been a bit disappointed by this campsite. With all the positive reviews, I decided to give it a go. The campsite is on a first come, first served basis and there is a box to drop in the cash. You cannot get any change. Though it says on the website the fee will be collected by the manager, no manager showed up when I stayed here in November. Not very helpful either was that upon arrival you are pretty much lost on where to go - no map provided whatsoever - find it out your own way. There are flush toilets provided and running water though this must be boiled to be fit for consumption. Mirrors at the bathrooms were shattered. The trails around that I went on were overgrown. The beach is nice, but nothing out of the extraordinary. Considering that it is a fair detour from the highway and that this is a campsite you need to pay for, I would have rather stayed somewhere else. Heaps of Mosquitoes too, despite it only...
Read moreSuperb location for maitai bay camping. The best camping site in Maitai Bay. It has toilet(might be smelly in hot days) and cold water shower. There is no power supplied. The management staff is very nice. We arrived late and the Lady managed to find a place for us and also provided some suggestions for fishing(fishing is not allowed in Maitai bay area). For this place, it's first in first service one. you need arrive before 10pm. bring as much power as you can, better to have solar power panel. bring enough fresh water for drink, there is cold water but not recommend for drink and toothbrush. can bring bags for showering. Just let sun heat the water. I saw lots of people do that. bring enough food the nearest supermarket paksave is around 30km away. there is a small diary in the town, but expensive. 4 bottle of water for 10$ VS...
Read moreHuge camping area - some recent reviews from 5 months back say it's closed but it is now open! No hard sites, all on grass so beware if you don't have 4 wheel drive and it's boggy. Long drop toilets by the campground but 'proper' toilets in the day use area - reasonably clean 👍
And FYI If you fancy the Maitai Headland Track: Google shows it starts from the road but that track leads to some land someone's living on and is wired off part way along the track on that land. Some very barky chained up dogs let us know to turn back. Kind of seemed like some prepper-type has illegally fenced it off but unsure. BUT you can start the track from the DOC top camp ground - the sign is there so maybe it's been moved and Google not updated? But yep avoid the current Google route and start from the...
