We stayed here for one night, booked trough booking.com.|| First I just want to list the good stuff:||-Location. The view is wonderful and you can do alot of nice day hikes from Eidsbugarden.||-The main building- lobby and sitting area is very charming and old. They have lit candles everywhere, and it it very cozy. So, before talking to anyone, the first impression is GOOD. The timber walls gives you the "good mountain feel" and it really has a good potential with the right managament. ||-The breakfast is nice and offers a wide range of food.||||The bad stuff:||-If you compare the price to other hotels at this rate you do not get what you pay for at Eidsbugarden. The staff is not very welcoming, and they dont seem to "know their stuff". They dont smile, they dont seem to have much knowlede about running a hotel, hiking in the area or any other things. I had to help them point out things a t maps for other guest, and they just stod there like questionsmarks. Wierd. They dont make an effort, and they are dressed very informal for a hotel at this price-range (sweat-pants and a flece). ||-You only have one option for dinner- their 3 course. If you dont like e.g fish- that is what you have to eat, beacuse that is the only thing they have. A dutch couple asked if they could have the fish exchanged with e.g some meat or something else, but no. No way if they would. I could understand this if the hotel was ful, and if there was a full chaos, but with 10 guest this is the bare minimum what you should offer. On top of this the portions are WAY to small and the dinner was not warm at all. Very dissapointing. ||-The entrance and the hallways around the rooms looks very run-down and not clean. The walls have alot of marks and it is FREEZING. They could have put up some fresh flowers, cleaned the carpet and made it look inviting. Maybe some candles here as well? ||-People who work at a hotel should be dressed in uniforms, and not in their private clothes. Here at Eidsugarden the cleaning people, the people in the lobby and other workers looks like hikers, and it is hard to tell if they work there or not. The hotel want to be a 4star, well- then you have to dress and behave like it. ||-Its COLD in the main building. We were lucky to sit by the fireplace, but other guests had to hold their hands on candles to get warm. That is not good.||-If you compare this hotel to e.g Union Øye (also and old mountain hotel at a dead end road) the diffrence is EXTREME when it comes to the people who work there, food portions and service.||I think is is a shame, because Eidsbugarden hotel has such a big potential!||If you want to keep having it the way it is now, you have to take the price down, and promote the hotel at a 3-start unformal mountain motel. Then guests wount be let down. Because you DO expect something when you...
Read moreStayed at this hotel Saturday to Sunday first weekend of September. Location is very nice. The hotel is pricy for what you get. The employees are not very knowledgeable about the local hiking conditions, nor do they seem to be professionally trained hotel staff, but rather just young adults hired in for the season. Rooms and food are okay, but in no way exceptional (rooms and meal portions are on the small side). Set out with my dad Sunday morning to hike across the mountain-pass to Gjendebu hut - unfortunately we had to turn around and go back because of an injury and ended up spending 8 hours in the mountains. Coming back very exhausted to the hotel we found it closed for the night because of an employee party. We asked if they under the circumstances would make an exception and let us stay for the night. One employee said that it was okay, but they didn't have anything on the menu because of the party - no problem, we just needed a room to rest/sleep for the night and of course we wouldn't bother their party. Within a few minutes after this message another employee showed up with a very unwelcoming (almost hostile) attitude and told us that we had to leave right away because staying wasn't possible after all (no further explanation was given). She said that we could go 3-4km further if we wanted a hotel. Alternatively there was a DNT hut close by that might have room for us. I explained to her as well about the injury and the fact that my dad is 75 years old and needs to have a bathroom close by at night (which is why a hotel is ideal). Little did it help - my dad and I got thrown back out of the hotel - end of story!|Thankfully the kind hostess at the DNT hut (Solbjørg of Fondsbu hut - what a fantastic person and a true ambassador of Norwegian mountain hospitality) welcomed us in and went absolutely above and beyond when hearing about our situation - being a hut they don't have rooms with a bathroom, but she got us a nice and cozy two-person room right across the hall from their bathrooms and made sure we got a nice meal. She also made sure to call the hut we never made it to and let them know we weren't coming. Can't thank her enough for saving our day. Needless to say, next time we will stay at the Fondsbu...
