Mount Totumas exceeded my expectations in every way - MAGICAL! It is a pristine oasis with ethereal views from every angle, extremely comfortable yet you're immersed in nature at the same time. The property is off-the-grid, green, and self-sustained. One of the things that impressed me the most is that all the water that comes out their faucets is pure and spring fed - no need to get bottled water which is unusual when visiting a foreign country. They also produce their own hydroelectricity. The food was healthy, varied every day, delicious, and made with local ingredients. The hosts and staff are warm and friendly. There's plenty of hiking opportunities and both hot springs and a river to bathe within walking distance.
I went with my sons - 10 and 17 - during rainy season and it was a perfect balance of clear mornings and rainy afternoons. Read moreAn illness in the family made things a little "off" during our 2-night stay so hard to know the level of hospitality when the owners Jeff & Alma are actually on site. Otherwise I can't say enough great things about this place! Totally wild up there bordering largest National Park in Central America, ancient forests with towering trees, birds and many other creatures not seen abound, food is tasty and reasonable (breakfast is included), fantastic trail map with detailed descriptions, guides available, super comfy beds and nice rooms (we stayed in balcony of coffee house bldg), very warm hot tub on site (never made it down to the natural warm springs), responsibly grown shade coffee, books and games, hummingbirds EVERYWHERE...don't expect to be pampered it's not that kind of place (grab your own drinks from the fridge and keep track), and the 4x4 transfer up there from Volcan is SERIOUSLY bumpy and therefore wouldn't recommend for anyone with back issues, etc. But to get to a place this special takes EFFORT! Amazing job you guys keep it up and wish we'd had more...
