The grounds are very nice and remind one of a time long past when a motel/hotel was a place to enjoy the outdoors as well. Thus, the child-friendly trails, statues, pools, etc. The indoor areas are nicely and neatly renovated without the paint spills and partial wipe-ups so commonly seen around Panama. The free breakfast was generous with several options for various tastes and appetites. Meals had menu items that varied widely in price and complexity. Our food was enjoyable and the service professional. The downside was the WiFi. While Panama has fiber-optic almost everywhere including this property and much more rural areas, there were issues. There were a significant number of access points but the ones for which guest passwords were available were weak (usually one bar). What worked in the morning, often would not by evening. Toward the weekend, none had any internet connection. Hotel staff said "its [national provider's] problem." By the second day of no internet, the front desk was telling guests "I don't know if there is a manager available and cannot give you a number to call." That was more frustrating and disappointing to me than the continuing outage. How a large hotel that claims big-name associations can have front desk people claiming to not know even if there is a manager on duty or on call just does not satisfy my expectations. There are much better venues at about the same price in the Volcan area and when we left in frustration, we found one with much less historic feel but which was modern, well-appointed, friendly, and...
Read moreOne of my worst experience ever. This use to be one of the best hotel in the area. My second room was clean... my first one had mildew on the toilet seat. The Garden is amazing and the staff was somewhat helpful. 2 stars. The pool is a joke. First of all, it is in a separate building. You need to climb 3 stories of stairs to access it. Remember, this is the mountain and it often below 17 C in the evening. The water was absolutely dirty. When we mentioned this to staff members they apologized and mention that since the reopening they are understaffed.
Ok! No swimming. Let's go to the Restaurant for a nice diner. Compare to what you get in Volcan, the menu was small and about 30% overprice. Ok! We will go to town for diner and comeback for our free breakfast. Cold scramble eggs, the ham was terrible but a descent empanada the carne wasn't to bad... the pollo was awful. Coffee was good though. In my view, pay the 1$ to park your car and take pictures of the amazing garden... then go stay elsewhere. I might have given another star if this stay was around 50$... but definitely not worth...
Read moreThis hotel is CLEARLY not well maintained at all!!! I was so looking forward since I had been there many years ago, but it was dark, sofas in lobby were stained, the room did not have AC, the smell of humidity in the room was unbearable so we had to open the door and window which brought bugs inside. In the morning we discovered why the smell… the wooden floor was seeping water in the area close to the closet . The restaurant was also not good. I was afraid to order so I asked for grilled cheese sandwich with fries. The sandwich was ok but the fries were super soggy and old. The entire hotel and restaurant were almost empty and sad. We went up to look at the pool and it was a disaster as well… so sad that such a beautiful structure has been allowed to deteriorate in this manner. We were planning to stay 2 nights and had to leave...
