The rooms at the Tannenhof were pleasant and clean and the food was decent. The grounds were lovely. The only real problem had to do with management. While I don’t expect people working in a hotel in a foreign country to speak English just for my convenience, I do expect a hotel in a Mennonite colony to have at least one person on staff who speaks German or Low German. We were met the first evening by someone who did speak these languages, and we explained that we spoke no Spanish, but no effort was made to offer an avenue of communication should we need it. Instead we muddled by, dealing with the lovely young kitchen staff/maids using Google translate when my few Spanish words didn’t suffice. ||I have said that the rooms were clean. They were spic and span upon our arrival, but after that we had to coax towels and toilet paper out of the girls, and ask to have our floors mopped and our beds made. Some days. Some days these things were done. We couldn’t figure it out. When we told them we needed something, they jumped to it every time, but we shouldn’t have had to tell them. Whoever had the job of managing the staff was asleep on it. I cannot praise the friendliness of these girls enough, nor their efforts to please us, and I do not blame them for falling short where they did. I blame whoever should have been in charge. The Tannenhof is a decent hotel. I hope someone will decide to care for it, and its guests properly. This would include offering an itemized bill for the stay, instead of waiting until it has been asked for repeatedly and,...
