I was recently booked into the Qallwa in Pucallpa for a week stay. Upon arriving to our room the room looked great. Really nice firm bed, well decorated, nice bathroom, all for our negotiated room rate of 120 sola's ($39 US) a night for 7 nights. The staff were friendly and tried to help in every way. ||But, after over three hours the AC was clearly not strong enough to cool us and we discovered that other folks in our party had been forced to switch rooms because it was too hot as well. To be fair about half the group had rooms with very good AC but by the time we complained all the good AC rooms had been redistributed. So after trying four other rooms we had to switch hotels. ||One of the compounded reasons for our growing concern was that beside the heat and poor AC the promised wifi wasn't strong enough to work in any of our groups rooms. They (we checked out) were forced to only be able to use it consistently in the lobby and street level restaurant.||In the meantime, we ate lunch in the hotel restaurant on the 2nd floor and it was missing a huge plate glass window which meant that we roasted in the heat despite a running AC. There were only two options given that were safe to eat for North Americans and the one I choose with chicken and green spaghetti was only okay. ||It was embarrassing to realize that the food and the room was inadequate (half the group was okay) and to take the chance on reflecting poorly on our local host but we choose to move to the Casa Adina which was $68 per night but worth every penny (almost $30 us more a night). The rest of the group managed and fought cold showers and little water pressure with a friendly staff that did their best under the conditions. At one point a senior leader demanded some hot water for her shower and was told that "sometimes we don't turn it on because it is so hot outside." I guess they think they are saving money but they are really chasing away future business.||One other thing, they had their hall lights on the floors set on timers that seemed to go out merely seconds if you were not moving. So, if you were talking (not walking) in the hall the lights keep going out and this was almost comical. Surely, the cost of turning on and off the lights so frequently isn't truly an environmental or cost savings--but I'm not an engineer so oh well. Finally, I was charged $48 plus to leave the hotel on day one without ever actually staying in the room. Since I didn't want to argue and embarrass the local host we paid the money without complaint to simply get out of there. I consider it a tax for not paying more attention to the Tripadvisor reviews and not insisting with my local host that it wasn't just as good as...
