Owner Felipe Diaz is clearly devoted to serving the guests' every need, starting with a luxurious breakfast comprehensive enough to fuel the most ambitious hiker. Wonderful touches, such as a scale model of the Cordillera Blanca in the lobby, a binder of native plants and the dye colors they produce over different durations, and plenty of complimentary mate de coca. At our request, Sr. Diaz found us an outstanding driver (Ivan) to visit distant sites and gave him very detailed instructions that resulted in two beautiful days of sightseeing. Read moreEverything about Hotel El Abuelo is perfect! The hotel itself is lovely: a charming clean room, excellent shower and a comfortable bed. There's a beautiful garden with walking paths winding through native Andean vegetables and fruit trees. The food is delicious; healthy and traditional dishes are prepared with vegetables and fruits grown in their garden as well as various Andean specialties. What makes this hotel truly memorable are the owners Mr and Mrs Diaz and their friendly staff. They make you feel as if you're staying in their home (which you are! - the hotel which has been beautifully renovated used to be a residence). Mr Diaz has built an amazing model of the mountains of Huascaran National Park. He'll share history and stories about the town, culture, language and the region if you like. In fact he wrote a fantastic guide book to Huascaran. I would love to...
Read moreUp in Carhuaz, accommodation can be very hit or miss. Some places are dirty, some have problems with insects. The Hotel El Abuelo is five star. It is immaculate and one of the most beautiful hotels I have stayed in. Family run, it is extremely friendly and yet professional. The decor is beautiful and the food is wonderful. There is a garden which is a piece of heaven to sit in.||||The hotel is right in the middle of town, perfect for walks around the market and through the square, and very near bus links to Lima. Felipe, the owner, is very happy to provide any local knowledge or links.||||While at the hotel, I became ill and they went beyond what could be expected in helping me, for which I will always be grateful. ||||The Hotel El Abuelo is worth a bus trip from Lima just to experience mountain life while staying in a place that is both very Peruvian and also...
