I’ll begin with everything that’s great. The views are outstanding. You’re tucked away in a valley and it’s very beautiful. Each room has a view. The rooms are nice, cozy, and clean. Beds were comfortable. Breakfast was good for the most part and safe (more to come on this). We really enjoyed the hot springs. It was so quiet and peaceful here.
Their biggest flaw here is the food. Not only a flaw, but a safety concern. We stayed two nights and from the start we didn’t enjoy the food. We spent three weeks in Peru (Lima, Miraflores, Arequipa, Cusco, Aguas Calientes, Punta Hermosa, Ollantaytambo), and the food at the Colca Lodge was by far the WORST food we encountered. It never appeared to be fresh. Potatoes would be dry and crumble, pancakes were hard, as some examples. Stay away from the alpaca and anything beef. It was awful. I’m not sure how you can mess up beef and alpaca as a Peruvian. It was unappetizing and has a very concerning aftertaste. The bacon on a sandwich we ordered was pale, discolored orange. Unfortunately on our last night, I developed severe food poisoning. Fever, ache, chills, nausea, the whole nine yards. No, it was not altitude sickness. We didn’t get sick from altitude sickness at any other stop. Employees don’t wear gloves when handling food either. I would expect better hygiene from a spa of this caliber. When I called in the night asking for water and tea because I had a fever and eat unwell she brushed me off and transferred me to the restaurant.
On the topic of spa, the couples massage was relaxing enough. They ask you what time of massage you like, but I don’t think they actually change anything. It was basically a rub down and karate chopping massage. The spa itself was nice. We did a couples massage. We enjoyed the private jacuzzi and the fruit plate that came with it after.
On the menu they offer a deal for a soup/salad, entree, and dessert for 110 soles. If you do the math, this even isn’t a good deal UNLESS everyone in your group wanted their own soup/salad, entree, and dessert, AND if they ordered the most expensive item in that category which is like 3 items. Not a deal at all. Don’t fall for it. Even the laundry services, men’s parts are 11/soles to wash but women’s are 16/soles? Just weird discrepancies.
Lastly, we’ve never been to a spa that was so stingy on towels, robes, and slippers. In fact, we’ve never been to a spa that didn’t include some sort of spa or sandals. We asked for a pair of slippers and were told it was for different customers. Eventually we got a pair. At the spa we asked for new robes and even that was an inconvenience. In fact, they only gave us one. Very strange. Not what I would expect from such a place. We talked to other guests who felt the same.
None of this is a reflection of the staff, who the majority are very kind, attentive, and hard working people. But I would encourage the owner or management to do a deep evaluation on their standards. We feel cheated. Not...
Read moreOur family of 5 stayed at Colca Lodge for 2 nights over Semana Santa. When we arrived we were greeted warmly and provided with a welcome drink while we waited for our room to be ready. We found the rooms to be comfortable with amazing views. The property is well cared for and staff friendly and helpful.
The restaurant breakfast was excellent and surpassed our expectations. We loved the made-to-order eggs, espresso machine (there’s hot chocolate too!) and variety offered. Dinners were equally as delicious with our favorite meal being the rocoto relleno.
The grounds of Colca Lodge are well maintained and beautiful. For families with children, there is a small play structure and playhouse for them to enjoy. The hot springs were a nice addition and we were fortunate to enjoy them before the rain moved in. A few of the members in our group visited the alpaca farm, which is a nice addition to the property as well.
Also, the staff of the hotel connected us with Colca Explorer for the transportation (to and from Arequipa) and Colca Canyon tour portion of our trip. Great service, clean vehicles and excellent tour guide!
There are really only a couple of things that could have made the stay even better but were not "deal breakers." We didn't realize that the parrilla dining option near the hot springs was something you'd have to ask for in advance. Knowing that information, we would have asked them to fire it up while we were enjoying the springs and then eat afterward. So perhaps a little more communication on behalf of the property. Also, it would be really nice if they'd offer drink service "springs side" so we didn't have to get out of the hot water and wait at the bar, soaking wet. Lastly, it would be great if one could arrange spa treatments either via WhatsApp or email. We waited one day until we were back in our room to call and by then, all massage times we booked.
Bottom line: We are so happy we split the Arequipa/Colca valley portion of our trip into two stays so that we could really enjoy the Colca area without the early morning wake ups and long bus rides crammed into one day. Colca Lodge is beautiful and...
Read moreI’m giving it 1 star just because I can’t give it 0. We booked a 2 night stay in what we thought it was a luxury resort, confirmed by the pictures and the price. The hotel and the surroundings look beautiful, however in our 2nd night there, after eating at the restaurant I got food poisoning. It’s unacceptable for a hotel like this to not have proper hygiene standards. I mentioned it the next morning during check out and they offered to remove the charge of the dish from the bill - later on, reading the other reviews I realized that this has happened before and it’s common practice. They’ve ruined part of my holiday and it felt so natural for them to come up with this solution. Now, the problem is that because of the horrible road condition between the nearby village and the property you will need to eat at least dinner at this place, since it’s not recommended to drive during the night. The rooms are big, however the bed is very hard and uncomfortable, there is no TV in the room and the Wifi doesn’t always work properly. The windows sort of close which means that mosquitos will enter the room. The thermal baths are nice, but you can’t sit outside because of the mosquitos. Nowadays there are solutions to this problem, so it’s disappointing to see that nothings it’s being done to improve the...
