Chaotic organisation. |The first day, I was told to meet in the dining area at 7:45am. At 6:30am, the guide turns up in my room and tells me breakfast is now 7am! I scrambled to get ready on time but when I got to the dining area they weren't ready for us.|The next day, I was told to be ready at 4:30am for pre-breakfast bird watching in the tree canopy. At 4am, there is a knock at the door asking if I'm ready to go!! ||Unsafe.|On one of our boat tours, the engine on the boat cut out leaving is free floating down the river in the direction of Bolivia. A guide from a different lodge stepped up to the occasion. He produced a fishing rod to distract the tourists and stop them panicking. When refilling the fuel tank didn't solve the issue, he used his radio to signal for help. This whole time my guide sat there doing nothing!!||Disengaged guide.|Compared to guides elsewhere in Peru, I found my initial guide to be disengaged. Initially, I thought she was an assistant as there was always another guide present. However, when I asked one of the proactive guides in the boat a question, he got annoyed and said I should my own guide. So I redirected my question to my guide but, after several minutes, she had not responded. The other guides in the boat reminded her that she had been asked a question and translated it. Overall, it was unclear whether it was a language barrier or a lack of knowledge but it made for a very dissatisfactory experience. As a veterinary epidemiologist, I chose the field station because they are a centre for research so I hoped to have a more in-depth, knowledgeable guide which wasn't the case.||Unfriendly atmosphere.|I also found the atmosphere of the lodge very strange. The first evening, I got chatting to other tourists staying (for context, I'm an introvert English woman so I wasn't inviting people to do shots late into the night, I was simply making polite small talk). Anyway, I was told that I wasn't to interact with the other tourists! Despite the meals being buffet style, it was dictated where you sat. Any deviation from the seating arrangements seemed to cause an issue. ||Eventually, I made a complaint about the organisation and issues with the guide. The manager did come speak with me and I switched guide. This did improve the experience but I still wouldn't recommend. Overall, it was the most expensive part of my holiday but certainly wasn't worth the...
