Pros: House was as listed as it appeared online in terms of appearance. The property and pool were stunning. The housekeeping staff were very nice. The beds were very comfortable and the bathrooms were very nice. Each guest room is identical so nobody misses out on anything with room choice. Eventually, everything we requested ended up being sorted out (see communication note below). The location was a bit out of town but we knew that going in.
Cons: HOST COMMUNICATION The communication from the hosts was extremely poor during the trip and is pretty much the sole reason for our 3 star review. Examples: Prior to the trip, the hosts asked repeatedly for the same information, causing confusion given that we already thought we had things confirmed that were being asked of us. It seems obvious multiple people are reading the messages but not communicating within their team once they received feedback from us. We arrived a bit early on our flight from listed check in time. We understood that we might not be able to check in right away. However, nobody told us this was an issue when arranging airport transfer, we were picked up promptly from the airport, and dropped off at the unmanned villa reception area. It was 30+ degrees, there was no AC, no water (until we found the dispenser and just assumed we could take some), and no communication on when our hosts would greet us. We waited about 45 minutes until someone came. At that point, we were walked down to the villa that was still being cleaned and waited an additional 20 minutes until we could go in. We definitely would've gotten lunch or something prior to arriving at the villa if our check in time was an issue. We had requested and confirmed motor bikes prior to our visit. They were not at the villa upon arrival and showed up a couple hours into our stay, past regular check in time. We again could've taken the motor bikes on an activity prior to check in if they were there upon arrival as requested. Nobody told us (and it was not in the description of the villa) that power goes out pretty consistently on Siargao, rendering AC and lights useless until around 10pm. Totally understandable, it's a remote island with limited facilities, but that fact needs to be obvious in the listing. Consider yourselves warned if considering booking here. The motor bike return was sketchy. We had to give them a drivers license as collateral. Starting in the morning, we reached out to our hosts and to the bike company throughout the final day with no response until we walked up to reception and found Arlene, who honestly was pretty helpful the entire trip. She finally got in contact with the bike company around 4pm when things close around 5p, at which point the bike company showed up with the ID. A simple response from the host during the day would've been helpful in relieving stress about having to leave the island without our ID. Our check out process was tough. We had an early flight and wanted to confirm when our following morning transfer was. We asked the host early in the day prior to checkout day. We did not receive a response regarding airport shuttle until 10pm that night, at which point the shuttle was confirmed to be an 45 min -an hour earlier than we anticipated. What if we went to bed early (for our early flight) and set an alarm for what we though the time was? The response time from the hosts in our WhatsApp chat again was poor. Another bullet on check out. We received multiple and confusing invoices for our mini bar tab. We eventually got things squared away but we were given again, multiple invoices, some with incorrect amounts that ended up being considerably more expensive than previously quoted with the first bills we got. Be careful about wine bottle prices. We don't believe they weren't listed in the room (the hosts will push back on this, but we looked very hard through the price catalogue and this is not our first time using a mini bar). We should've asked for the price, to be fair, but the price should also be apparent at time of...
Read moreWe had a fantastic stay at Mango Tree.
It was made most memorable by the wonderful team who worked there. They helped to ensure that we had the most fantastic time in Siargao. They organised our airport transfers and a scooter, as well as meals for us on arrival, our breakfasts, and were always on hand to offer great tips, assist with tours, massage bookings and just provide wonderful company and hospitality during our time there.
We had the smaller of the two villa's, which was perfect for us. We didn't even really use the second bedroom and ensuite. The setup is great and we spent a significant time at the property, as it was such a nice place to be, which was fortunate as we had a few days of very heavy rain. When it wasn't raining, it was a great launching pad to explore and we toured the whole island.
The infinity pool was brilliant, whether it was sunny or pouring - super warm and just the right size. Even when it was raining, it was such a pleasure to sit out in the communal living area, as the air temperature was still very warm. The location was only 10 minutes by scooter to General Luna and we really enjoyed being able to get back to some peace and quiet, within minutes. Breakfast was delicious!
Any small issues, that always can arise, were quickly and well dealt with. So if you like a warm, personal experience, with privacy and some calm away from the hectic main town, we can't recommend spending time there...
