We spent three nights, Saturday to Tuesday, in a standard room overlooking the pool/garden. Couldn't fault the room at all - very comfortable and spotlessly clean. The hotel was fully booked over the weekend and nearly all the sunbeds were occupied when I took my late afternoon swim and with only two parasols shade was very limited, sadly. There's no handrail, so I had to rely on my ever obliging husband to help me in and out! My post swim drink turned out to be problematic. Firstly, we couldn't find anyone to serve us at the bar and when we did, a young man served me the smallest glass of wine ever - about a third of the measure poured by the receptionist the following day!||Breakfast was much as one would expect : fruit, cereal, cold meat, cheese etc and hot eggs and sausages, but no English Breakfast tea! Except for the Monday morning when there were only a handful of guests and the choice was very restricted indeed, no hot dishes, very little fruit - very different from when the hotel was busy. ||We went to the one and only local café twice for dinner, which was very reasonably priced and plentiful. On our final night we had partridge at the Pousada. Mine was OK but my husband's was not good at all - grey/ black substance under the breast. Oh dear, I do wish he'd said something at the time!||We felt that the Pousada was understaffed. The young man who gave me short measure on my wine on our first day also served at breakfast and at dinner. Too much of our time was spent waiting for someone to either help or serve us. I'm afraid to say that this was the most disappointing of the four Pousadas we stayed at on this visit...

Stayed 2 nights, fabulous building of 15th C with mix of Mudejar and mix of Manueline architecture. 20 rooms and one suite. Gorgeous gardens and pool behind high curtain walls off the main town square. Maples, cypresses and holm oaks provide some shade from the unrelenting Alentejo sun. We had a standard room which was small but 'perfectly formed' and spotlessly clean. A superior room is probably worth it for the extra space. Our room looked into the castle courtyard and restaurant. A large cypress soared like a 'jack & the beanstalk' out the window.||||The staff are delightful and most helpful. We ate in the restaurant which was wholesome, reasonably price if uninspiring food. There was a good and reasonably priced wine selection. Breakfasts were ample with good selection of hot and cold options and wide array of breads, cakes and cereals. Orange juice was freshly squeezed and delicious.||||There is a beautiful terrace near the castle waterwheel under the maples that gets the evening sun. Great place to have a cold beer or glass of wine and read or watch the sun go down over Alvito.||||Only grumble was the shower at the pool did not work and the standard room was a tad small. This Pousada was a treat and great place to explore Moura, Mourao, Monsaraz and Regengous de Monsaraz and the nearby Menirs and Dolmens or passage tombs. ||||We could not access the parish church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção, dating back to the early 16thC or churches, the Igreja da Misericórdia and the Igreja da Senhora das Candeias or fortified church of Santa Luiza on...

We stumbled across this place just as a lay over between Ebora and the algrave for a night. We booked a basic double room which was very clean, spacious and modern. We were asked on arrival if we’d like to book dinner in the restaurant for that evening and had an incredible meal in the beautiful courtyard in the centre of the castle. The food was truly excellent and very reasonably priced too - 3 course meal for two and a bottle of wine came to €47. Very peaceful chilled place and all staff were incredibly helpful, especially the restaurant staff. The pool was well sized and clean and the beautiful hidden gardens are meticulously well maintained - the whole place felt very ‘magical’. So good we actually booked to stay a second night which says it all. Katie & Ben will be back again :)

I stayed at the Castelo for 17 days due to a work trip and I was surprised by the flair of this beautiful place! After such a long stay the Staff made me feel like family. During the whole stay the whole Staff was super friendly and professional! They all speak very good English so communication was not an issue! I can recommend the restaurant, good food nice views and very good service! Alvito is a small town, not much to do but no matter where you go you will find friendly people! 5 Stars for the Staff (reception, restaurant,Cleaning) 4 1/2 Stars for the restaurant 4 Stars for the Rooms 4 Stars for the pool area 10 Stars for the nostalgic atmosphere and making me feel like the King of this Castle! Thanks a Lot

Was really hoping to give an incredible review for such an amazing looking hotel. The building is true Instagram material. Same too the rooms. Unfortunately, we decided to eat here and they had a buffet set up rather than a la carte. I’m afraid the bain-marie helped to turn meat into leather! My meal was a 2 out of 5 at best. The service was also poor for a dining area that was less than 40% full. Lastly, the air conditioning in the rooms were beyond ineffective. Shame these two issues could not make up for such an amazing building
