We came across São José Barrelário Hotel while searching on Google Maps and decided to book a double room—and I can confidently say it was one of the best decisions of our trip. This hotel is an absolute gem, combining breathtaking views, world-class service, and incredible amenities that made our stay truly unforgettable.
From the moment we arrived, the service was nothing short of impeccable. The staff greeted us at our car, helped with our bags, and made us feel welcome right away. Check-in was a personalized experience, complete with a taste of port and nuts at the desk—such a thoughtful touch!
The staff went above and beyond for my spouse’s birthday, surprising us with wine and cake in our room, which made the occasion extra special. Every detail of our stay was taken care of flawlessly—they ensured our massage and spa amenities were scheduled, helped us with dinner reservations, and made sure we were always comfortable. The level of care and attention to detail was the best service we have ever experienced at a hotel.
Dining at the hotel’s restaurant was another highlight. We ordered the lamb, raviolo, and fish stew, and every dish was beautifully prepared and full of flavor. The wine pairing was completely tailored to our preferences, making the experience even more memorable.
Beyond the amazing service and food, the hotel offers a range of perks that made our stay even better: ✔ Spacious terrace with stunning views ✔ Complimentary wine tasting on the property ✔ Free electric bikes to explore the area ✔ Room service available ✔ Delicious breakfast buffet spread every morning ✔ Beautiful room views overlooking the Douro Valley ✔️ Spa facility with great views of the valley
I highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Douro Valley. The service is unmatched, the food and wine are top-tier, and the setting is picture-perfect. If you’re looking for luxury, relaxation, and a truly special experience, São José Barrelário is the place to stay. We cannot...
Read moreI am aware I am writing a review that goes in a different direction from previous ones. Do not misinterpret me - this is a high-quality, very recent property, that offers a comfortable and restful stay in Douro.|However, I believe it overpromises and underdelivers, given the 5* positioning and high price (compared with other options in the region). |The rooms are comfortable, but bathroom is not very functional. When you pay for a "view", be aware that it is actually from far away, nothing compared with e.g. Octant.|The swimming pool layout feels awkward; it's unclear why the architect placed a tall wall beside the lounge area and separated the swimming pool from the sunbathing chairs. |The restaurant aims to be fine dining, but dishes were not well executed. We had lunch at DOC the first day and it is incomparably better. |Breakfast lacked low fat options. |Even though it is a 5*, there is no turndown service nor tea in the room. |There are no gym facilities - not even a single bicycle or treadmill! In the reception they offer alternatively that you walk in the vineyards, but it really feels like an makeshift solution. |There was a free wine tasting, but the host seemed rushed. At one point, he even said "we have to hurry up, I have more things to do than being here" and he often split wine while pouring it - even though it cost supposedly 48 eur per bottle. |I was looking forward to giving this feedback directly to the hotel but I did not receive any post-stay survey (I don't remember the last time this happened to me!)|Overall, while Barrilário offers a pleasant stay, it falls short of true 5-star expectations. With some thoughtful improvements, it could match the luxury experience it...
Read moreWe had the absolute pleasure of staying here in January. We had not been to Douro before and I looked at many properties before choosing. We were beyond happy with our choice for the second we drove up to the second we drove away. First the property is stunning and spotless. The views everywhere are incredible and relaxing. Second the staff, from Yvonne and the rest of the front desk staff, Fabio in the bar at the complimentary wine tasting, the restaurant staff, the spa staff ALL make you feel like the only and most important guest. Great wine recommendations and the extra care and professionalism expected but not always found at 5 star establishments.||The restaurant was great - choices for all diets for meals, great wine and port and a huge breakfast buffet. ||We were also welcomed in our room with a wonderful cheese plate and wine complimentary as a nice surprise. Was so nice after a long week at work in Lisbon! ||The room was HUGE, with a 2 person soaker free standing bath and wonderful smelling toiletries.||Please if you have the chance stay at this property - DO IT - you will not be disappointed. I cannot wait to go back and am sad we only had 1...
