Having travelled for 5 hours from Douro region in the north I eventually arrived in Alentejo and Fontes Barbaras. It is located deep into the countryside after turning off a secondary road which I would not have found without GPS. However it was the perfect place to relax and unwind after a few days travelling. I was welcomed by Patricia and immediately got that sense of homeliness . My bedroom was excellent with all the necessary conveniences and a nice view from the window across the quinta. Allthough late on a Saturday evening Patricia encouraged me to visit the winery where her husband Diogo and their son gave the tour and some solid information on his grapes and wines. It was really informative and so casual. Sampled a few nice wines some of which I purchased before leaving. Later in the evening I dined and sipped more wine under the stars while chatting to some other visitors. Breakfast next morning was great with a nice selection of juices , cereals , fruit and tasty scrambled eggs from the farm. With reluctance I had to hit the road again after a truly relaxing stopover. Read moreWe felt right at home the moment we arrived! Everybody was so warm and friendly and a complimentary bottle of the house white was just what we wanted after our drive. We had a great evening with Diego as he presented his wines and told us about his passion wine making! We learnt so much from him and loved his red! His red wine is probably one of the best wines we have ever tasted and incredible value at only 2.50 euros! Accompanied by locally made cheese and hams it was an evening we will never forget.
