Quinta das Escomoeiras — Hotel in Celorico de Basto

We stayed in a 5 star hotel in Porto followed by this Quinta which is 3 start B&B but we preferred this place. It is in the most beautiful location. Sitting on the terrace when we arrived tasting the wine with a wonderful cheese and ham platter, all we could hear were the birds, waterfall nearby and the occasional cockerel while looking across the valley at vineyards and trees.||Rooms are rural, full of old wooden furniture with beautiful bedding. Bring your own toiletries - some provided but no shampoo or conditioner. No air conditioning but just keep windows and shitters closed in day time and the room stays cool.||Lovely terrace, guest lounge with TV/small shop of produce and guide books and leaflets, indoor tables if it rains.||Lovely outdoor pool and you can sit under the orange tree for shade. Outside there is also changing rooms and toilets. Pool towels provided.||Extensive walks around the estate to see the vines, donkey, horse, chickens, kitchen garden. You can also go down to the river and see the waterfall. There is a very small beach area shaded by trees but the water was too low to go in to the river from the beach (4 foot drop) and a family of ducks was protesting loudly at us being there!||Fernando and all staff are so friendly and helpful.||Breakfast is good - fruit, fresh orange juice, cheese, ham, bread, croissants, sometimes scrambled eggs. coffee, tea.||There is no restaurant but there is a snack menu which requires at least 12 and preferably 24 hour notice. We had this once - cheese and ham plate, bread, salad and cake. All was excellent with home made orange cake which was delicious. All with a jar of the home made jam and bottle of organic wine - rose was our favourite.||Beware of driving car right up to house - not possible to turn round so have to reverse out. We left ours at the old house after the gates.||Google Maps took us on a cycle track on the old train line - if you get to a red rod with lines down middle - don't go on iy. We were advised to use Wize instead which we did for the rest of the holiday.||The Quinta is out of the way and you will need a car but some lovely places nearby - Amarant and Castilo de Arnoia. Fernando will recommend restaurants and places to visit.||||Wonderful place...

Dans le cadre d'un circuit dans le Douro nous avions choisi cette Quinta qui paraissait très jolie sur les photos. Sur ce point pas de problème le site est très joli. Par contre, il faut y arriver. Même avec le GPS, l'assistance du propriétaire par téléphone semble indispensable. Comme nous lui faisions remarquer, le propriétaire nous a répondu que "le paradis ça ce mérite" ! Une fois au portail de la propriété on peut aller jusqu'à la chambre en voiture pour décharger les valises. Par contre le propriétaire nous demande ensuite de ramener les véhicules à l'entrée pour lui permettre de sortir un de ses 2 véhicules en cas de besoin. Il nous semble qu'un hôte accueillant se devrait d'assurer le confort de ses hôtes en mettant ses propres véhicules à l'entrée. D'autant que pour revenir à l'entrée on ne peut le faire qu'en marche arrière entre un muret de pierre sèches et une haie et bis repetita le lendemain pour charger les valises. Pas doué en manœuvre s'abstenir ! Notre chambre était petite et sans balcon (d'autres en ont, voir même une terrasse, mais ces différences ne sont pas indiquées et il ne semble y avoir qu'un même prix (110€ en l’occurrence). Nous étions le 29 juillet il faisait 40° et pas de clim dans la chambre. Seul conseil du propriétaire (qui est opposé par conviction écologique à la clim) : ouvrir la fenêtre mais sans lumière à cause des moustiques. Petit problème : les volets sont fixés à l'intérieur des fenêtres. Donc fenêtre ouverte = volets ouverts et nous avions un lampadaire en face de la fenêtre ! Nous avons donc passé la nuit porte et fenêtre ouvertes avec l'éclairage du lampadaire = Nuit blanche. Nous suggérons au propriétaire de mettre au moins des ventilateurs si cela ne heurte ps sa fibre écologique.||Le lendemain, nous avons pris un très bon petit déjeuner (mais pas servi avant 9h !) sur la terrasse très agréable au dessus de la belle piscine dont nous n'avons pu profiter vu le temps mis à trouver la quinta.||En conclusion : très joli site pour les amoureux de solitude et de ballades en montagne. Dans ce cas bien se renseigner sur la chambre affectée, éviter de venir en période de forte chaleur et rester au moins 2 ou 3 jours. En aucun cas une étape sur un circuit touristique. Having stayed at this amazing Quinta twice now, we can’t wait to go back in a few weeks time. Hidden on the banks of the Tamego river, it’s a working Quinta producing its own wine, oil, vinegar and jams. The breakfast features fruits from the own garden, the welcome drink is not a half empty glass of cheap sparkling wine, but a whole bottle of their own. The 2015 vintage is just amazing. We bought two cases to take home. The rooms are pleasant and because of the stone keep cool even if it’s scorching outside. The pool, immaculate garden and stunning views of the valley allowed us to fully unwind in these unnerving times.
