Herdade De Vale Covo — Hotel in Mértola

This place is magical. I went to visit the store to purchase for my company. I got to see the setup, the land, the farm, the house and the distillery and sample the essential oils. I got so much more than even this from my visit with Francois. I got to see and learn about the life work of a Belgian expat and his successful, environmentally conscious and responsible company. Francois is completely dedicated and immersed in renewing the local plant life,; fortifying the native oak trees struggling with climate change with compost of remaining plant parts leftover from his distillations. At the same time, he is growing, harvesting, distilling, bottling, labeling and shipping essential oils of the highest quality, making them available to the select few who understand the value of what he does. He gave me a scent sampling of his oils and filled, labeled and boxed them for me after having the most engaging and inspiring conversation, over coffee and chocolates, I’ve had in quite a while. Visited 8 years ago Most stunning place. Spectacular view very quiet! But wasn't at all impressed with the owner We were the only guests and you could tell he wasn't pleased that we turned up. Felt like intruders. We were planning to have a meal in Mertola. But were then sort of talked in to having a meal at the Herdade. Don't get me wrong i'm happy with any food. But it was what the owner charged for the spaghetti And the Salad! The bottle of wine we could have bought down the village shop for 5€.
