Montalma — Hotel in Monchique

We stayed with Maggie and John about two weeks ago; only for 1 night, and regretted we hadn't booked for longer. High on the side of Foia, highest point in the Algarve, south-facing with a magnificent view to the ocean, spanning grandly east to west. The narrative of their journey to this beautiful spot is as fascinating and compelling as the inn which they have created. Open spaces indoors and out, lovely and bright and light. They opened in December, so of course everything looks new, but the finishes are top-notch and I expect will wear well. A tree-pruning group was holding a day-long workshop when we arrived; yoga meetings and groups are also hosted, and the spaces for such appear to be excellent. Food and conversation were fresh and fun.

We enjoy hiking, and took advantage of the location and the trail systems. For sunset on the arrival day, we followed the narrow, very-lightly-traveled road to the mountain top, and met interesting travelers (two Swedish families caravan-ing) along the way. The next day, we hiked up the backside of the Montalma property, connected with an official trail, made a grand loop all the way down to Monchique, then return. (Monchique itself is a scenic hill town, and we enjoyed walking up and down through the narrow ways.) This time of year, everything was green and fresh-washed, just a gorgeous time and place to be out and about.

Maggie made a dinner reservation for us at Jardim das Oliveiras, just down the hill. Wonderful, local, traditional foods, warm and comfortable interior setting.

Thank you for a wonderful stay! I stayed in Montalm a week ago with my boyfriend and we felt in love with the place! 

Spacious and bright rooms, a wonderful tranquil garden (that just invites to stroll around, relax and do yoga), amazing views to both the meditereanean and the Atlantic Ocean, friendly animals and a cute dipping pool for when the days get too warm (and the 45 min drive to the beach is too long).

But most of all I want to point out the hosts, who build something truely amazing up there and gave us the warmest welcome! We felt like part of a family from minute !. Also very impressived to learn about the building process since the house is 100% off the grid.

We spent just one night at Montalma while traveling through the region, but it left a lasting impression. The views are absolutely stunning—even with the occasional moody weather, the landscape was breathtaking. We loved the off-grid, eco-responsible nature of the place, which adds to its charm and authenticity.||Our room was spacious, beautifully decorated, and had an amazing terrace view. The real highlights of our stay?
