Our first trip to Portugal and our initial plan was to rent a house in the country side - we needed some well deserved stress free time away from buzzling Lisbon.||Instead we decided to come to Moinho do Alamo. BEST decision - EVER!||We wanted something different and yet comfortable, quiet and relaxing, something where we can fully enjoy family life and feel like home.||Built on the ruins of an old water mill, the premises were designed and built by the owners and is still family-run. Its built to be as a place where travelers and locals can mingle, exchange stories or just enjoy some peacefulness. With only 8 rooms, one can be sure that this retreat will never be over crowded and one can always find a quiet spot around the very spacious grounds.||What's great, is that the grounds layout has different "themes". There is the pool area, a small secluded island, a pond to row a boat on and even a sandy beach. As different the grounds areas are, as different are the rooms. Each lovingly decorated individually, cosy and of big enough size to feel comfortable.||You can feel that this place has been designed and built with love and passion for creating a retreat, where you can feel at home. What makes it stand out from the sterile, cold-designed hotels are the the little decorative details which you can also find easily in a private home and which make this place charmingly quirky and an experience worth every single moment. ||We were lovingly looked after by the owner's family members and they tried everything to make our wishes come true. Just another puzzle piece that made the stay here so enjoyable!||Our warmest thanks to Carolina, Fatima and Rita who also took exceptional care of our tummies. Food was freshly prepared with most of the ingredients coming from the grounds (vegetables, eggs, meat, etc.). The freshness of the ingredients resulted in amazing taste - no fancy multi-course Michelin-style meals, but well-cooked, balanced, down-to-earth, local cuisine which tasted amazing!||To sum up: Off the beaten track, away from the tourist hordes, individuality and relaxation guaranteed and where you are made to feel more like a long-standing family member then an anonymous guest.||||Our tip: make sure you have a rental car. The hotel is quite off the main roads and is only reachable via about 10km of unpaved dirt roads. The rental car also enables you to explore the area, drive to Evora (a very nice town from the middle-ages) or just simply takes you out of the hotel if you fancy an evening in one of the local...
Read moreThis is ideal if want a quiet country location. It is approximately 10km from the centre of Montemor, but is easy enough to find. The last km to the hotel or so is a track, but was absolutely no problem even for our small hire car It is almost a Portuguese-style villa, with an outdoor pool, and spacious grounds. Our room benefited from a (shared) terrace, was clean, comfortable, and warm (thanks to the supplied oil-filled radiators). Our bed was quite small, and we should have asked for a bigger one, but I slept soundly! Owner very nice, even charming. Breakfast very nice, in a charming room, almost a sitting room, with views over the grounds. An evening meal is also available, but we decided to go to town instead. There are horses for horse-riding, and a small lake with a boat for rowing available. By the way, payment is by cash, as they don't have a...
Read moreThe hotel is in the middle of no where. No food amenities not even a warm breakfast. We inquired about lunch or dinner but were told nothing is available !! We were more or less the only guests there. No taxis available to take to airport. We checked and Bolt was charging approx €80 but no availability. The hotel staff offered to take us for €140 which was a bit ripoff but we did not have any choice. No staff spoke English so we had to use google translate to communicate. Not a pleasant stay.|The bathrooms were dated and you either got boiling water in the shower or really cold. No house keeping or clean your rooms or change towels for the 3 nights we...
