Normally I only write reviews if the place was excellent. That puts me in a bit of a situation with Casa do Rio because it’s so far above excellent that any words I could possibly use to describe it will likely not do it justice. Anyway, I’ll try :)

Nestled into a ravine of sorts just above the Douro river you’re treated with great views all day long as the light shifts, and every room does have an unobstructed river view. On that, this hotel has only 8 rooms, so count yourself lucky if you’re able to get a room here. Two of the rooms are suites and are located in front of the main building, the other six are on either side of the restaurant / communal area. It’s very cozy and gives you an ‘at home’ feel. The rooms themselves leave nothing to be desired, their appointment envelopes you and makes you feel very comfortable indeed.

Being part of Quinta do Vallado means their wine selection is of course excellent and I won’t write more about it here, however, the dinner that comes with it every night is absolutely fantastic. Their chef is a rockstar! Not to mention the swift and friendly service. Having to deal with a maximum of 16 guests at dinner makes for a relaxed dining atmosphere. And did I mention how amazing the food is?

Overall the staff here is beyond excellent; we were greeted by José Pereira upon arrival and I have to say that, with my almost 20 years of professional experience in higher end hospitality, I’ve never ever seen a more attentive and involved host. He truly makes a difference in an already above and beyond place. José, if you read this: THANK YOU to you and your excellent staff!

So, how to sum this up… Casa do Rio is simply spectacular, truly one of, if not the best hotel in Portugal. If you have the opportunity to try it, do not hesitate to do so. You will...

One of the more unique places I’ve ever stayed and a clear highlight of our two-week tour of Portugal. The drive to get here from any direction is fun and challenging, but the reward upon arrival is extraordinary. It’s the sort of place that makes you not feel any need to leave. Every view is spectacular and guests are really allowed to make themselves at home throughout the property. Wonderful hiking into the vine-draped hills full of olive and almond trees, plentiful water activities on the river, and gorgeous pools. Feels private no matter how many guests are there at any given time. The set dinner menu changes everyday and is seemingly never to be missed! Just a fantastically relaxing, intimate, tasteful, cost-effective few days. My wife and I cannot speak highly enough of our experience at Casa do Rio and look forward...

Our stay at this hotel was truly unforgettable. The dinners were absolutely exceptional — some of the best food we've ever had, full of flavor, care, and creativity. Every evening felt like a special experience. The hotel itself is peaceful and secluded, surrounded by beautiful nature that instantly puts you at ease. The spa was wonderful — the perfect way to relax and recharge after a long journey. And the wine... wow. The local red wine and port completely changed how we see both — rich, surprising, and deeply memorable. On top of all that, a huge thank you to the team for making our stay so special. Everything was top-notch, and we’re especially grateful for helping organize the proposal — you made that moment even more romantic and meaningful. This place will always stay in our hearts. We’ll definitely be back! 💛

What an exceptional stay at Casa do Rio. A friend had noted it as a must stay in Portugal and being well worth the hike. She was spot on. My two night stay turned into three all due to the beauty of the location, remarkable service and kindness from the staff, delicious food, and this place allowing me to unwind. This place offers it all: hiking, biking, swimming, boat ride, a fantastic spa, etc. you can do as much or as little as you’d like and between the sunrises, birds chirping, wine tastings, and sunsets the days do go by. I cannot say better things about Casa do Rio and the staff there, it’s a magical place.

The location is unique, close to the Douro river and surrounded by vineyards and olive trees. This makes for an ideal place to relax, walk the paths in the property and taste the wines. The service is extraordinarily nice and efficient. Food is also excellent; in particular we enjoyed the very healthy and delicious breakfast. We hired a boat for a nice ride along the river to Spain and back, and had the opportunity to see a rare black stork; birdwatching is also interesting around the hotel, I wonder what measures they take to protect the grapes from birds in harvest time 😀. We will come back.
