Part of a lads golf tour, stayed at Monte Rei for 2 nights. |Thr 2 bed Apartment we rented was in an accommodation block with its own swimming pool. The building was contemporary in style, very slick with all the mod cons. More than enough room for 4, comfortable and spacious. |Breakfast was excellent, all the food was fresh and plentiful. The cooked menu provided more than enough variety all consumed in a lovely setting. The service was fine although we felt could have been delivered with a bit more of a smile and enthusiasm.|We ate in the Grill for dinner and although it was very quiet, we really enjoyed the tapas-cooked to perfection(the patas bravas and Crocketts and Black Pork were especially good).|Big heads up to Cesario who served us on our second evening. He was engaging, polite and educational, a real asset to the Hotel.|There's a decent sized town called Tivara 20 mins down the road, which has a good amount of restaurants and bars and well worth a diversion.||The Golf course was superb particularly the back 9. It's a real treat and whilst the course lacked the water (local council/Mayor have reduced the water intake due to last year's drought) to make the fairways more lush, the course was still outstanding. The practice facilities were also top draw with as many free practice balls as you like, all on grass. Thr chipping and putting facilities were also excellent. George on the range was again, extremely polite and helpful.|The pro shop was not well stocked and being made to pay for practice on my last day(€25) was a little irksome given we'd spent a good deal there already but that's a small gripe.||Would definitely return although would make sure the fairways and greens were back to their splendid best before...

I totally agree that this place is extraordinary, speaking about the course and the rooms. Top level - for a top price. One of the best courses i ever played worldwide What is mediocre to low is the restaurant the grill , as its needs urgently renovation and the food is way overpriced for the quality. You have to leave the resort with a car/taxi to find an alternative -as the other restaurant inside ( Vista) charges min 150 Euros per menu. What made me mad is that you have to pay extra - if you want to exercise at the range and hit long shots, after ! your round (before is max one hour allowed). So even being a guest at that place , and paying the greenfee for your round , you have to pay extra 25 Euros , for one hour, so if you are an ambitious player you might have to pay 50-75 Euros extra on top of the green fee just for using the range afterwards. This i call a greedy rip off . Especially as we were not informed before about this - booking the rooms and tee times it should be written , as its quite unusual. And you don’t find it on the website not even the the price for the greenfee (about 180Euro) But what is written how great the practice facilities are :-(
I wanted to discuss this with the director of golf , Darren Griffith - explained the situation at the front desk , but never got a call back or a message. This shows me that they are more interested in glamour and image of the place , but not in real service to their guests. But as most guests are average 70 and older , the willingness to complain gets...
Read moreI genuinely am not sure how the reviews are still so high for this resort. It is in shockingly bad condition. Let's start with the golf course: it's currently lift, clean and replace... in Portugal... the maintenance and upkeep is offensive for the prices they are charging for the green fees. You could play courses in the UK for 1/8th of the price and in better condition in the winter. I've been here twice and on the accommodations front there is a stark contrast between the clubhouse suites and the villas. The former are actually well designed and quite modern - I think that was the highlight of the stay. However, the other time I came, I stayed in a 4 bedroom villa and it was old and dated. The hot water also did not work the entire weekend and so we had to shower at a different location. The service is really hit and miss. Some staff members are absolutely clueless whereas a couple were very helpful. I would understand if this was an ordinary resort but for the money they are charging and the raving reviews, I would have expected much, much more. The resort is also kind of in the middle of nowhere and it will take you 10-15 minutes to get an Uber so keep this in mind. All in all, I would avoid visiting here at all costs - gives me The White Lotus vibes and it's a bit eerie as there are half completed homes scattered over the property. I think it's living off of it's past glory days and now the owners are waiting for it to die off without putting any...
