Hi. I hope this message reaches the owners of Mesendorf.
The place is gorgeously authentic and you have absolutely exquisite tastes. I stayed in a few traditional, rustic places, but none of them matched Mesendorf on something people can't replicate: a good sense of interior deco and dedication to being authentic. an angel dies every time a fkin rustic hotel uses cheap flowery sheets (yes, Meșendorf has those white cotton-silky airy sheets that enhance sleep).
I love what you did with it. We stayed in the room with the sauna and felt amazing, it felt like an ecosystem on its own. I honestly never stayed in a hotel where I would feel that I have so many activities to do..in one room. We stayed late and talked around the fire, we steamed in the sauna, grabbed drinks, even looking out the window we had a BLAST, and there was nothing happening outside. I don't even know how to say it, wherever you looked, you found something nice to do. We were absolutely fascinated and felt like we were sleeping in a museum, i swear. I almost felt bad about placing the glass directly on the table, that's how authentic and valuable it felt.
We got miserably hungry around 8pm (hadn't booked dinner) and the hosts whipped a neat cold dinner for us (thank you Dorin, that was kind of you). It was kinda homey but also professional, we admire them as hosts.
ALSO: I am p-offed that someone blasted on the dogs on one review. those dogs are scrupulously clean and fab. i am a cat person and i wanted to sneak one of those dogs and take it home with me. they were those hunting dogs, brown and sleek, with glistening unicorn fur, i wanted to lick those perfect dogs. nobody can realistically think those doggos are dangerous. (they did pee on my husband's motorcycle tho, because that's how dogs claim things that they like, i get what they were thinking)
Please Stop wasting heat. The rooms were overheated (even the empty ones, eg the trophy room). As a millennial, I simply cringe at the waste, I briefly felt angry/sad/frustrated about it. I literally burned my skin on the radiator in the bathroom. This is not good for you as a business, and no, it doesn't make me feel good (not practical, couldn't sleep well because of the heat AND felt horribly guilty about wasting the heat). Yes, the mattress needs changing in the sauna room, it's lumpy and creaks, it makes sense changing it. on the bright side, I have no idea how those 100% authentic 1800's floors don't creak. it's an old house with zero ghosts :D
We were on a romantic weekend, but if you're looking for a team building, it also fits amazingly well. We had a blast exploring the library and reading what the previous team buildings wrote on the whiteboards. This is one of those places that thinks about the space in tiny social spots to enhance communication. There is something about fireplaces that get conversations going. This is not the typical rustic place, i think it was created by very invested people who have great...
Read moreWe really enjoyed the hotel itself. It's located in Mesendorf, which is a small village, not terribly far from Rupea Castle. The village is small and home to a fortified church. It seemed very quiet. The hotel has a rustic feel to it, but it's all very well kept up and clean. The rooms are spacious enough. The two rooms we stayed in had lofts, so two people in the bed below, two people in the loft above. Modern bathrooms were nice, and everything worked. We signed up for dinner at the hotel, which was traditional Romanian food and was great. There was water, coffee, and lemonade available for free at all times. Breakfast was also really good and had a nice, wide variety of different things to eat. There was a grassy area that kids could run around on and even a trampoline out behind the hotel. We also enjoyed sitting out by the fire pit as the evening fell.||||When we arrived, the only lady there didn't know a word of English. We muddled through it with hand gestures and Google translate. Things worked out, so not a big problem, but there are other travelers this might really bother. This place reminded us that we were in the Balkans, where time isn't as important as it is to many from more Western countries. Both dinner and breakfast were served much later than promised. Finally, the biggest reason for my lower overall rating (honestly, this would've been 5 out of 5 if it wasn't for this incident): trouble paying. First, cash only is always troublesome. Second, there was a misunderstanding with the price charged for dinner that was the hotel's fault and left us overcharged. The hotel contacted us shortly after making our booking and asked if we'd like to have dinner at the hotel. I asked how much it would be for our party. They told me a price that seemed OK, so I agreed. When we checked out, they charged me a higher price for the dinner. I asked why, and they explained that it was so many euros for adults and so many for kids, and we had 4 kids they were charging me for. When I showed them the conversation that had happened on Booking.com, they said, "Well, that was a colleague of ours and he made a mistake, only charging you for 3 kids." Not much I could do, but it left a very bad taste in my mouth. The quoted price is the quoted price, especially because I told them how many kids we had, so it wasn't my mistake. If hotel staff makes a mistake, that's on them, not me. Overall, service level here was not what it should be, especially considering how much we enjoyed...
Read moreThe village of Mesendorf can be a good starting point for discovering the area. Although the most popular village is Viscri, if you do not find availability in Viscri, you can stay at Mesendorf Gasthaus.
Mesendorf is a village where there are not many things to see and do. We wanted to walk around the village, but we had to turn back because of the aggressive dogs barking at us. Then we wanted to go for a walk in the forest, but we didn't manage to find a path that could be practicable. We wanted to make a reservation at the gastronomic point Mesendorf 65, but we could not find availability. We wanted to visit the fortified church, but it was locked. So we hopped in the car and explored other areas.
At Mesendorf Gasthaus we stayed in the apartment with a private sauna, which we were very pleased with, the room was clean and nicely decorated. Mesendorf Gasthaus represents the revival of an old Saxon house and we were happy to discover that everything was done with respect to the atmosphere of the old village. The room, the barn, the garden, everything looks wonderful. But, unfortunately, we were disappointed by the food. We expected to eat well, to have special local dishes, given that we paid 100 RON (approx. 20 EUR) per person for dinner. Maybe a goulash, a stew, maybe some plum dumplings. At least 2-3 dishes to choose from. I would have liked to have local cheeses made with milk from the cows in the village. Maybe a compote made from apples from the orchard that fell on the ground. A simple apple pie instead of the attempt of tiramisu made with store-bought ladyfingers and cream from the tube. Or halve the prices to better reflect reality.
To end on a positive note, we would like to return to Mesendorf Gasthaus at some point for the quiet, the garden,...
