Bucovina is beautiful, and the painted monasteries deserve all the praise they get, but the Hotel Eden is just sad.||||No effort is spared to confuse the visitor. The large sign on the road is in front of an older building. When we arrived the front door of that building was locked, and bore a notice telling us to ring a number to raise reception. An open door at the side led into an empty dining room, and it was only by investigating a door at the rear of that room that we discovered a second large car park with a modern four-storey building bearing a neon hotel sign. At this point we still hadn't seen another human being.||||The receptionist checked us in and then told us that our rooms were back in the deserted building we'd already investigated. They could only be reached by going up one floor in the new building and crossing an external walkway that led back to that deserted building. There was no suggestion that they might unlock any doors in that building to make access to the rooms easier. The rooms were a fair size, but dim, and the fittings looked a bit faded. Access to the rear car park was by a lane off the main road, very badly signposted. ||||At present the new building functions on the ground and first floors - reception, spa, restaurant - but everything above those floors is still under construction. For our first twenty-four hours, the poor bloody receptionist who had admitted us seemed to be doing everything. She helped haul our cases over to the rooms. She waited on table at lunch. She waited on table at dinner. Next morning she waited on table at breakfast. Apart from a chef seen dimly once or twice, there seemed to be no-one else working in the entire place. On the second morning she was assisted by two lads - or rather, she carried on doing almost everything while they stood about grinning and looking vacuous.||||The Eden has aspirations, but just how it's a very long way from...
