Read moreEN: The image that the pension offers online has nothing to do with the reality. We booked a double room with private bathroom and we were given an ugly room decorated with brown carpets and curtains and an uncomfortable bed. But the worst is still to come: the room has MOTHS! 4 ugly moths, of which one was dead on the floor and one we had to hunt at 3 am in the morning, because my husband woke up hearing it bang against the window, trying to get out. Next morning we served breakfast (22,5 RON/person), where we offered some home made salami and pastrami which tasted like raw meat. Obviously they served it before it was ripe. And the tomatoes weren't any better either, as the skin was already wrinkled from how old they were. All in all, a bad experience. What surprised us is how is it possible that such a place has such good reviews? The people being nice is not enough to give a place a 5/5.
Read moreMy husband and I stayed at Pensiunea Mara for one week the end of April. The location is down a narrow street from the National Highway and very near to the Mara River. The sounds you hear are those of the river and some nearby farm animals. The air was fresh and the sounds relaxing. The rooms are quite comfortable and quiet. Because the weather was so mild, we slept very well with the windows open. Maria and her husband serve excellent, tasty meals. Breakfast always had fresh dairy products: milk, cheeses, and during the spring fresh sheep's milk yogurt, along with homemade breads, excellent fruit preserves, and meats. Lunches and dinners included the best soups I've ever had. Each meal was exceptional and plentiful. The delicious desserts are made by Maria and are pastry shop pretty. Her husband is an accomplished chef who also makes his own aged cheeses. It was a totally magical experience. This is a good base for exploring more of Maramures or from which to take leisurely walks...
