A mill and a swan.
If you translate the name of this inn, "Moara cu noroc", in english language would be "The water mill with luck". This name is inspired from the name of a novel, written by a romanian novelist, Ioan Slavici in year 1881. In fact this water mill existed and the ruins of this mill are still there, somewhere a few kilometres from the inn. Enough with the history.
This inn is renowned for its restaurant or better said restaurants. Because I think there are about 6 dining places or dining rooms that can hosts at least 2.000 people. Yes it is huge, but every place and room has its intimacy.
One dining place, dedicated to special events, like weddings or other great ceremonies, has the roof like the Opera from Sydney, Australia but a little bit modified. This is located immediately at the entrance in the parking place, on the left side. Two of the dining places are outside, one uncovered and one with a roof, two are inside and the last one is also outside but during the cold weather they closed the lateral parts with a foil, like solar foil to keep the inside air warm.
The parking place is big but is still small regarding the maximum number of clients that can be there simultaneously. There is also a small place arranged for children, playing park, to play outside. And of course, if we are talking about a water mill, there is a small river or a running water, coming from beneath the inn and going along the parking place, located on the right side. And in that small channel there are ducks - 2 or 3 different rases, geese and 2 black swans and all are coming close to you if you are approaching the water - maybe the people are feeding them.
The all furniture of the restaurants is made from wood, solid wood and heavy wood, in a traditional way. The walls are decorated with paintings, traditional plates and different objects from a rural household. The kitchen is outside and you can see how the food is prepared through the windows where the waiters are taking the plates with food.
The menu it is something original because it is written using local idioms, so if you are a stranger and you learned romanian language don't expect to understand what is written in the menu, I think at all, because even nativ romanians have problems to understand it. More of the romanians are guessing the meaning of some words, so particular the words are. But don't worry, there is a menu in english language, and surprise!, written also with idioms. I wish you good luck!
The food. Ok! The portions in the plates are huge. So if you decide to eat there, I suggest you to order step by step, dish by dish, because there is the risk, after the first dish, to observe that you have not enough "room", in your stomach, for anything else. I don't know how much everyone eats, but from my experience, I had only one dish and I had no place not even for desert.
The food is good ant tasty and they have no problem to change it with something else if you are not satisfied with what the waiter brought to you. But, try to be reasonable. Don't push it!
If you cannot eat everything you ordered, you can request to have the remaining food packed for "to go". They will be glad to help. I did that and I was very satisfied about the way they packed my remaining food.
The waiters are acting very professional and prompt and they are ready to help you with everything you want to eat. We were served by Ioana and we were very satisfied. When we arrived there we saw a lot of people at the tables and we thought that we are going to wait a very long time to be served. But, I think they are very organised because in 15 minutes we had the food ready despite the fact that there were about about 80 - 100 people in the restaurant.
The prices are not so high, I could say somewhere at the middle of the list but it compensate the quantity of the food you...
Read moreI am beyond happy to write a review for Hanu Moara cu Noroc. My wife and I live in Canada and got engaged this past April. We wanted to get married in Romania in a rustic but elegant venue. We spent a few weeks searching before we landed on amazing luck finding Hanu Moara cu Noroc. Liliana was the one who helped us coordinate the entire event which happened through phone calls and Excel sheets. Liliana put us in contact with a pastry lady, a decorations lady, and a florist if needed. She was able to reserve all the hotel rooms for our group for the night of the wedding. The wedding size was about 110 people which we celebrated in the rustic wooden interior hall. Let me tell you, everything turned out AMAZING. The food was very good and lots of it, the wine was produced locally which we received many complements on, and Liliana went out of her way to surprise us with a few requests we didn’t think would come through! I have to extend enormous gratitude to Liliana for the planning support but also for the numerous comments on how amazing the service was. Everyone felt like they were treated as royalty. I also want to extend a big thank you to the servers, the amazing chefs, the owner who came to meet us an tell the us the venue story and show us the area, and the whole team for making our night unforgettable. We planned a perfect international wedding in less than 6-months, in different time zones and via WhatsApp; we couldn’t have imagine anything better. The venue and the garden are absolutely beautiful. As a group, we stayed a second night just to enjoy a bonfire, the area, and the garden the next day. My wife and I are super excited to return on our 5-year anniversary!!! I’d highly recommend Hanu Moara cu Noroc for anyone getting married from groups 50 to 600 people, anyone in the area looking for delicious food, or anyone looking to spend a weekend somewhere with a...
Read moreRustic look, feel and accommodations, with an occasional bug inside your napkin. The room was clean and orderly. There were no odd odors or smoke smells at all.
Locals tell me that It's an old mill that was converted into a hotel. It's beautifully rustic, outside and inside. The breakfast buffet choices were many but in small sizes and portions and even the hot or warm choices such as scrabbled eggs or sausages had become cold by 8.45am. Coffee or tea were available upon request through a staff member not at the breakfast area. The three fruit juice available in three 1 liter containers were half empty and not refilled. And then came the 🐛 breakfast bug.
I know that one cannot stop all bugs all the time but when, at breakfast you reach for a napkin from the napkin holder and you, like me see one coming out of the napkin you wish to use you might almost jump out of your chair and loose that delicious breakfast like I nearly did. So caution is advised.
Otherwise: 3 story building with stairs only. dimly lit bathroom with only one small bulb above a small sink. no streamed or on-demand content on 22 inch TV. Only live channels. loose water faucet that is held in place by the pipe in the wall and could break a the slightest slip and cause who knows what... no ironing board or iron in the room. spare pillows in the old-fashioned wardrobe without pillow cases. The bed mattress is as thin as my aftershave bottle is tall. About 4 inches thin. See...
