I stayed here 10 years ago and decided to come back as i was in the area for the weekend and what a terrible mistake this was. This place is under new management for a few years now and the standards have slipped terribly. It bills itself as a 4* but i would not even class this as a 2* hotel and it is in a very bad shape.||||The hotel is situated in a beautiful location, surrounded by forest and on top of a small lake. But the compliments end there- the road to reach the hotel is full of holes and bumps. We arrived in the afternoon and could not park anywhere, there was a daytime wedding with about 200 cars so we had to park on the dirty road and walk. Upon checkin, reception staff completely disinterested = no regard for guests. They gave us a mobile (!) number for reception...We had a room in the accommodation annex, a short walk from the main building. The room had a terrace and seemed functional. However:||||1) the radiator was not working at all, stone cold despite turning it up to the highest setting. Even being summer, it was rainy and in the mountains it gets quite cold so this was not ideal.||2) the hair dryer or the plug in the bathroom was not working||3) bed and bedding very poor quality. Mattress was about 10cm thick and seperate bedding and sheets despite being a double bed.||4) Our room was not turned over during the day, nothing cleaned or changed (towels, sheets)||4) hallways around rooms dirty and not clean (bin bags, coffee cups left for hours)||5) breakfast....some leftover sausages eggs and pastries from the wedding the day before, thrown on a table with guests left for themselves.||6) very dirty carpets and disinterested staff||||It was a shame to see this hotel end up in this state. Please avoid and check other...
Read moreThe Sofia Restaurant is part of a luxury complex, encompassing a hotel and conference center, making it an ideal destination for large-scale events like team- building retreats and company conferences. My experience focused on the restaurant, which boasts a tri-level layout with ample seating. This multi-tiered setup makes it exceptionally well-suited for accommodating significant crowds, such as wedding receptions or large company gatherings. During my visit, the restaurant was relatively quiet, likely due to the mid-week timing and rainy weather. However, I could easily envision the space filled with energy during peak season. The restaurant also features a generously sized terrace, complete with a grill and rotisserie, capable of handling large quantities of food, perfect for outdoor events. The terrace extends onto a covered bridge, equipped with a waterproof covering, which effectively connects the restaurant to the conference center and hotel. This bridge also offers additional seating. The hotel itself includes a sizable pool and a playground, adding to the complex's appeal. The highlight of my visit was the traditional Romanian cuisine. Our group of seven indulged in a feast, beginning with a selection of three distinct soups: Ciorba de burtă (tripe soup), Ciorba de fasole (bean soup), and Ciorba de perişoare (meatball Soup). For our main courses, we sampled a variety of classic Romanian dishes, including Polenta Bulz (a polenta-based dish with cheese), Sarmale (cabbage rolls) served in a clay pot, Buttered Påstråv (trout), Chicken with cabbage salad, and Pork Ribs served with country-style potatoes. The food was fantastic, offering a genuine taste of Romanian...
Read moreRecommended to eat in the restaurant of this large modern hotel by a local. We were prepared to be underwhelmed but no such thing: the traditional dishes we ordered were excellent. We started with mushrooms in sour cream sauce with polenta. Sour cream here is much milder than in the US and went perfectly with the wild mushrooms which were in season, we had seen lots of them offered for sale by the road when we drove over the Carpathians earlier. Then we had a variety of local sausages with a salad of lightly pickled peppers and tomatoes, fried potatoes, red cabbage and green beans. Everything was full of flavour and well cooked. For dessert we had papanasi, two very light fresh donuts filled with wild blueberry compote and served with sour cream. This is a classic Bukovina dish and impossible to improve!|Friendly service and a great price:quality...
