Jelen salaš — Hotel in City of Subotica

This is a place that we visited every time it was in our way for the past 4 years, however, the last two times we did so, we were very disappointed, the first time in February this year, the second time last week. I’m not Serbian, my husband is, and since we have moved to Hungary we are bringing all our guests on a short trip to Subotica that finishes with lunch or dinner in this salaš. The point is that we want to show people that Serbia is very nice and that Serbs are good people, despite of the bad media that runs in the West. Last Monday we felt very embarrassed by what happened in this restaurant.||||To make a long story short:||The waiter wasn’t happy that two of my friends wanted to share the meal, insisting that the rests could be taken home, they still shared. They’ve put 3 portions on one plate (2 of the same meal, 1 of another), this way they gave us less food: they cut on the potatoes and on the 2 beef portions. Their bank terminal was broken since early in the morning, so we couldn’t pay by card – we weren’t informed about that on ordering – just when we wanted to pay, and seeing a group of foreigners I believe he should have told us that from the beginning. At the end he accepted the payment in HUF, taking a nice commission for the exchange. And last but not least, one of my friends couldn’t eat the whole portion, and asked the waiter to pack the food: later at the border we’ve seen that the French fries were missing and also some meat. ||||We were very ashamed of what happened and we aren’t going to go there anymore, the service was unfriendly, they cut on the food by putting it all on one plate, they haven’t packed all the food that was leftover, the potatoes were old, we basically paid more on the food because of THEIR technical problems and my friends had a taste of the...

Together with my friends bikers we stopped there for one night. Place turned to be a very good choice. Very friendly staff. We were allowed to park our motorcycles on property even though the parking is actually on the street. Rooms were very clean with comfortable beds. Everything was really great. Now a bit about the restaurant. After the whole day on the road as we were riding the bikes from Bulgaria we needed a lot of good food as six hungry guys can eat. Believe it. We were surprised with the quantity and quality of the traditional Serbian food. Everything tasted great. Pork ribs, cevaps, grilled chicken, it was excellent. Also the waiter was very helpful with the proper suggestions of the food.
