After a rather unpleasant stay at a local pension, we decided to try the Hotel Cierny Orol at the center of historic Roznava. The day before, we had enjoyed a delicious lunch with excellent service at the attached restaurant, and the manager, who spoke excellent English, was so helpful about several aspects of traveling in Slovakia. We made the incorrect assumption that the connected hotel would share the same qualities as the restaurant. How wrong we were! This was the only reservation that we made directly with a hotel website and not Booking.com. This is also the only reservation that was lost. You can imagine our surprise when we went to check in and there was no reservation. To make it worse, the desk clerk was really nasty about the matter. In fact, she was downright hostile. Despite the fact that most, if not all, of the hotel was empty, she gave us a miserable room. The hallways smelled of cigarette smoke, an odd thing for a non-smoking room. The room itself simply smelled unclean. It was so small that moving around about the furniture was difficult. We could forget laying out our suitcase out to get to our things. The room had a window directly above the restaurant, whose space also serves as a walkway from the main square to the path to the Tesco and other large stores. You can imagine the noise. When we had a problem with something in the room, the lady at the front desk simply acted as if she didn't understand what we were saying. I feel badly that we had to bother the restaurant manager on his day off to communicate with her. The conversation was very heated.||||We enjoyed nearly three weeks, traveling all over Slovakia, and staying in pensions and hotels that were excellent. Hotel Cierny Orol was a total...
Read moreIt's okay. The idea is there but it needs a lot more attention to detail to make it special. Our room was a nice representation of historical preservation but lacks a few details that modern people are used to. The bedside lamps had bulbs that were incredibly obtrusive. The original window, while nice, don't tilt but most importantly don't mute the outdoor noise. It was really noisy and that made it hard to sleep. The bed appeared to have new mattresses but were a bit too stiff; we woke up with achy backs. As with most older buildings, electric outlets are in short supply; it would be nice to have those plug in multipliers. The bathtub/shower had a shower curtain that was way too long to put inside and if left outside, you'd make a big mess. The sink had a faucet that was made more for a big mud room sink. If you tried to wash your face, water would splatter everywhere. While I really love having a separate toilet room, you have to go to the sink/shower room to wash your hands; you have to touch door knobs and light switches with your dirty hands. The city water has many minerals and therefore is brown; the city is working on that issue. The safe in the room didn't work. The service was good but...
Read moreI stayed here in Sept 2019.||||Staff at reception and in restaurant is quite good. Only one guy at reception who sits in morning and one girl who sits in evening can speak English. Other cant speak English, so bit difficult to communicate. But they are quite polite and helpful.||||Rooms are quite in good condition. Passage on the first floor which leads to room is bit dark and you cant even find switch to turn on the light when it is dark. So better to use mobile flashlight. Beds are cosy.||||Breakfast is OK.||||Location of this hotel is one of the best in Roznava. It in centre of the village. In the square, there are many other restaurants with good food choices available. There are other shops as well for buying necessary goods. Due to accessibility to all restaurants and shops, location is plus.||||Overall...
