Everything about this place is excellent! We booked a stay here very last minute while we were in Kobarid and we got the last room, which is the “tent” up the little hill from the main house. By “tent”, I mean like a built wooden structure shaped like a tent with an actual double bed inside, and a door - rustic and comfortable, with a table and bench right outside the door, a small sink, and the toilet nearby.
The son, nickname Yoši, greeted us as we pulled in and showed us the property. There were deer, a greenhouse, and lots of veggies planted around the area. We saw the dad pick some ripe tomatoes from the garden which I’m sure we had in our salads for dinner that evening. The overall surrounding views were breathtaking and so tranquil. Wished we stayed more than one night!
Dinner was the best we’ve had, an unexpected multi-course meal that was delightful! No menu, Yoši just told us what they had available and if we wanted all four courses - YES! It was a meal we never wanted to end. After dessert, he even brought out a variety of homemade liquers/digestifs; I tried the honey one, my boyfriend tried the more popular one. Breakfast was just as elaborate with a full spread of yogurt, bread, jams, honey, eggs, loose-leaf tea, coffee, etc.
I highly highly recommend staying in this place, even for just one night. The family who runs this place is very kind, friendly, and helpful with tips and tidbits around the area. Quite possibly the best place we’ve stayed...
Read moreEven in a foodie paradise like Slovenia, this family-run restaurant gives a new meaning to the farm-to-table experience. The outdoor tables are literally IN the farm. At one point a roving miniature horse decided to help himself to the lettuce garden and was politely sent back to the pasture. You can visit the other horses, pigs and fowl while you wait for the next course to be delivered. No printed menus. Aljoša explains what's fresh today, while his wife and mom do the cooking. Starter of fresh picked wild garlic and skutin cheese spread, with local cheese from the lower pastures where the cows stay in winter. Followed by choices for both vegetarians and meat-eaters, everything unbelievably fresh and well prepared. We couldn't choose between the pear pie and the local version of struklji for dessert, so we had both, followed by a choice of local schnapps. A memorable outdoor feast. The dining room is also pleasant, filled with local artifacts from World War I and original beekeeping panels. I came here on a tour arranged by local expert Meeting Mountains. While Kobarid is famous for the world class cooking at Hiša Franko, a visit to this local family that cooks with love shows where Slovenia's gourmet chefs get their...
Read moreTourist Farm Jelenov is located perfectly with stunning mountaintop views, easy access to multiple trails, including the climb up to Mt. Matajur and across the Italian border, and is just a 15 minute drive from the nearest town. Breakfast was extensive and all locally-made or grown right on the farm - eggs, jams, fruit, teas, breads and pastries, yogurts and milks from local farms, homemade museli, drinks made with their own syrups, etc. The farm also has various pastures with domesticated deer, pigs, goats, and chickens, which you can feed… and Jelenov also serves you as cold cuts for breakfast. The accommodation in the “glamping tent” was very simple, rustic, and small, and it’s a slight inconvenience to walk down a hill for the shared shower/bathroom. The dinner is nice in that it’s basically all made with produce from their garden, but be warned it’s expensive for what it is (€35 per person for the full menu, although a la carte is an option as well), although the alternatives are inconvenient. But we had an excellent stay overall, and the family is so kind and eager to welcome you to their farmstead and...
