After just a couple of minutes from checking in it became obvious this was not going to be a great stay. I arrived around lunchtime and asked to have a meal. I was refused lunch apparently due to Covid? I subsequently asked about evening meals and was promptly told I could not eat that evening and I would have to book in advance for the following night, due to Covid. After some deliberation I queried how busy the Hotel was and from looking at the car park and the fact that it was essentially end of season I proposed that the hotel in fact was not busy and that to check if there was room in the dining room for that evening would be an appropriate thing for the front of house to do. She finally conceded and went to the restaurant area presumably to ask about tonight's numbers. She came back and declared it was OK for me to eat that night. After travelling for 13 hours I was relieve to say the least. But quite concerned that there seemed to be a great willingness to tell you what you cant have/do and a lack of willingness to look for a solution. This is very disappointing given that the hotel charges premium rates for the area and promotes itself as being a relaxing place to stay, which to this point was not proving to be the case. Eventually I was given my room key/card and proceeded to the room. I had several bags and was not offered any assistance with them. On arrival at the room all I wanted to do was have a lie down and plan where to get something to eat for a late lunch. The Hotel is situated at least a ten minute drive away from anywhere to buy food. If you are not familiar with the area it can be difficult to find places to eat. I asked at the reception for any recommendations and they could not suggest anywhere, which I found truly bizarre. Before heading out to find a source of food I began to realise that the room I was in had a very distinct smell. I tried for some time to identify the source of the strong moldy odor. After a while I noticed a distinct stain on the wall by the headboard of the bed. On closer inspection it looked like a damp patch and certainly appeared to be the source of the stink. I knew I would not be happy to stay in the room overnight especially as the odor source was next to the bed. I contacted Booking.com to establish if I was within my rights to ask for a change of room, given the attitude of the hotel reception staff I chose to establish this first before approaching them. On approaching the hotel reception with my now repacked bags I was actually challenged by the hotel reception staff as to why I had contacted Booking.com in the first instance. They were abruptly confrontational about it and had I not been exhausted from my journey and very hungry I would probably have left at this point. However, knowing the area from previous visits I knew it would be difficult to find an alternative in the area I wanted to stay. I was then taken to a different room, again pulling my multiple bags back upstairs with no offer of assistance. On opening of the alternative room it became apparent that there was no lighting working in the room despite the staff members efforts to try and re try the door key/card. At this point I was left outside this room and told to wait. After around ten minutes the staff member re-appeared with another key and took me to another room. Thankfully this room had lighting and didn't stink of mold! It did smell a bit musty but probably just needed an airing. The following morning there was a knock at my door while I sat on the toilet. The 'person' entered my room and only once the door was open could he hear me saying I was in the bathroom, upon which he left. This happened again later in the stay. They seemed determined to get into the room for some reason!? It began to dawn on me that the Hotel was certainly showing signs of ageing and lack of maintenance. The walls were marked and had portions of plaster missing on the edges of walls. Furniture was badly...
Read moreWe stayed here at the end of our cycling holiday and decided to upgrade our room to the Chateau - don't bother, not the 'real McCoy' . We had the worse two nights sleep all week staying here, bed ok but the pillows really uncomfortable. Aircon unit not working plus the fan in the bathroom never switched itself off so noisy all night long! The room was spacious but no balcony. I would save your money and stay in the main hotel which looks very modern and rooms do have a balcony and probably aircon that works. The pool was out of action so we only had use of the Jacuzzi which was sub-standard. The buffet was good with plenty of choice for dinner but a bit limited for breakfast. Service was attentive and very good, especially the girl who served us for drinks and dinner in the evening, hats off she was really good and very helpful with our choice for wines. I would recommend this hotel and it is in a quiet location, but do not bother with the upgrade to the 'Chateau' as I think you could be...
