We came to see the famous 3.5 billion year old rocks visible in the Barberton Greenstone Belt, and were thrilled to find that the road to Mountain Aloe Den from Barberton is in fact the Makhonjwa Geotrail. All along the road there are numerous geosites with detailed - and accessible! - explanations of fascinating geological formations such as banded ironstone, pillow lavas, volcanic lapilli and many more. Several sites have detailed panoramas to help visitors interpret the landscape spread before them, which we all found a most interesting exercise. Mountain Aloe Den itself is a delight: the rondavels are extremely comfortable, the views are mind-blowing and the charming hosts Mamsie and Isaac could not be more welcoming.
