I travel between George and Tzaneen on a regular basis. It’s a grueling drive. In the past I had stopped for coffee in Willowmore, but had never stayed overnight. Since there is a particularly high danger of kudu on the road at night, I recently decided to spend the night and pulled into the Royal Hotel in the heart of town at around 7 PM. What a pleasant surprise. ||||The Royal Hotel may not look particularly alluring from the outside, but inside it’s a spotless and friendly oasis. While it feels like your stepping back in time upon entering, I was also struck by how clean and fresh it was. The wooden floors shine bright with wax, the walls are freshly painted, the rooms are large with high ceilings, the comfortable beds have crisp fresh white sheets and duvet covers, the ensuite bathrooms are clean and bright with spotless white fluffy towels, and aside from the occasional creaking from the wooden floors, the peace and quiet inside is almost deafening. ||||I ordered a simple burger from the adequate hotel menu and asked for it to be bought to my room. It had a hand-made patty grilled to perfection, with cheese and egg added, and a fresh hand tossed salad on the side. Everything was freshly prepared and beautifully presented. Simple and wonderful! ||||After a pleasant breakfast served by friendly staff I feel sure now I’ll stop at this gem of a discovery often, and take some time to explore the little town...

Old style front desk reception / office with long hallways leading to our rooms echoed my doubts, step by step. The rooms however were spacious and very neat. Dinner was available from the restaurant or the comfortable bar area. I've opted for the latter as a warm fire was going and the chatter of local farmers and some other travelers were inviting company. Bar service was good and speedy, but to be honest think my chicken burger came perhaps with the same haste back from the kitchen - still cold. The warm bed and the honest friendliness of the platteland people however made up for that and I really enjoyed my visit -...
Read moreHotel with a lot of potential. However we did not have great experience. We stopped to overnight to continue long drive tomorrow.
Music echoing through the passages and it is half past 10 in the evening. It continued even later. Not much rest!!! Unforunately our room had curtains without block out lining. Room was right next to back entrance with porch light on he whole night. Felt like sunrise the whole night. People were also entering and leaving through that door, that urgently needs oil and makes terrible noise. Some guests pulled on doors and shouted in the night.
We were very excited for our stay, however I suspect we just had abd luck with room location and the music!! Will try...
