Driving through the beautiful Nuy Valley, look out for the towering twin palms of Penhill Farm. An iconic country retreat awaits where impeccable gardens and rolling lawns frame an outcrop of white-washed buildings, including East Grange and West Grange cottages, where we stayed.||||Each of the two identical, double-volume thatch cottages are air-conditioned, serviced daily and sleeps four people. The stylish double volume, open-plan living, kitchen and dining area includes a table for four, leading to a private courtyard with a Weber braai and al fresco dining area. Firewood, charcoal, briquettes and firelighters are provided. The kitchen is equipped with a fridge/freezer, microwave and Bosch oven and hob. The second bedroom is located upstairs, while both bedrooms come with quality bed linen and towels, spacious en-suite bathrooms with bathtubs, walk-in showers and luxurious bathroom amenities. ||||Both East and West Grange have an electrically powered Jacuzzi set in a patch of private garden where one can relax and bubble away while stargazing. Read moreWe attended a 50th birthday celebration over a long weekend at Penhill, and our host booked out the whole venue. The setting is beautiful, and even the 90 minute trip from Cape Town was picturesque. We shared the newish East Grange cottage with another couple, and loved it- upstairs and downstairs rooms in an airy cottage, very well appointed, with everything one could need. Our room had a huge bathroom, with a large power shower, and a door onto a side patio with loungers and a hot tub. The open area living room, kitchen and dining area has its own patio and a Weber braai, with coffee, tea, condiments etc provided. All areas have aircon units, important in this part of the world, but even though it was 30+ outside, the cottage was so cool that we never used it. You can hear people moving in the upstairs room, so I would recommend the cottage for a family with kids, or very close friends with similar nocturnal habits. Our host used Nola, the caterer recommended by the manor, and all the meals were absolutely delicious. The gardens are magnificent, and there are many walking, hiking, running and mountain bike trails. The manor provided mountain bikes and tennis rackets for the energetic. There is a pool and lovely dam for swimming, and the common entertainment areas are perfect for accommodating a large number of guests. A really lovely stay, and we would...
Read moreI was here for a wedding and I really wasn’t impressed with the owner. Let it be clear. I thought that the general staff were fantastic! I felt sorry for them because I felt they were under staffed and the owner was very rude when speaking to them. Having said that the owner was even rude when speaking to us as paying customers. He is extremely arrogant and rude and should not be customer facing. We were made to feel like a big inconvenience and like we were putting him out by simply existing. When double checking if the bread was gluten free (which had been arranged weeks earlier) he said he didn’t have the ingredients list and we should “just see how your body reacts to it”. Absolutely appalling customer service. After speaking to several other guests they all agreed that they had similar feelings about him and felt sorry for the other staff who seemed to nervously tiptoe around him. We won’t be back and definitely won’t be recommending the place which is a shame as the location and the rooms...
