For me, such an experience consists of three parts; 1. the lodge, 2. the food and staff, and 3. the gamedrives. 1. The lodge is absolutely beautiful, perfectly nestled in the middle of the Kruger with a watering hole right in front of the deck which can have some surprise sightings. The rooms are a bit small and wifi would be recommended. 2. The food and the staff were equally impressive. A good variety to choose from the menu, tasty and well presented. The staff are friendly, gladly helps with anything and make you feel welcome. 3. Unfortunately the game drives are where it lacked for me… It is advertised as a 26000 hectare concession, but what they don’t say is that they may only drive on a certain part of the concession. The vehicles from the three lodges on the concession do not communicate with each other and it was rather disappointing to hear what others saw and you didn’t. As a result, we did not see much on the game drives. On our three night stay, we only saw lion once, while the other vehicle from Hoyo Hoyo saw lion three times. There was no table with the sundowners. The drinks, coffee and snacks were served from the hood of the vehicle. The vehicle itself was never cleaned or tidied during our stay and there were not enough blankets for everyone aboard. To conclude, for the amount of money paid, and the nature of the destination, the game drives form the biggest part of this type of trip, which was a rather big let down. I’m glad that we did the trip, but unfortunately I cannot say that we would do it again. We’ve been at a few similar lodges, cheaper in comparison, with a much greater experience.

My wife and I just finished a 3 night stay at Hoyo Hoyo and it was incredible and exceeded all expectations. It is one of the more reasonably priced all inclusive lodges located inside Kruger national park. Our game ranger Moses was great at tracking down any animal we wanted. We only had 2 full days and we managed to see all big 5 (lion, elephant, Buffalo, rhino, and leopard). The facility also has a watering hole behind it, so you often see animals coming up for a drink. Some of the other reviews mentioned the A/C breaking or items being stolen… We had no issues with either. We left our valuables in our room and didn’t even put them in the safe. The AC worked great as well. The only downsides to the lodge are it’s about 2 hours from the closest airport and it doesn’t have Wi-Fi. We actually enjoyed being disconnected so it might not be a downside for everyone. Also, the driver who picked us up at the airport stopped for us to see the animals so it was basically an additional game drive. Another highlight of the lodge is the food. It was incredible for every meal. They give you multiple meal options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and let you decide what you would like. I honestly can’t recommend this place enough. Harold the manager and the entire staff will make you feel incredibly welcome and make sure you have a great time.

Unfortunately we were disappointed. The whole lodge and the room seemed old and poorly maintained. The wooden fence near the outdoor shower was damaged, we could see people beyond from the shower and people could see us in the shower. The sink was leaking because of the incorrect distance between the faucet and the basin (see attached photo). When we arrived, nobody helped us with the luggages, we had to carry our luggages by ourselves. Nobody made up our room in the morning during the safari (in other hotels it happened) and nobody filled the bottles of drinking water in the room. In the evening, at 10 to 7 pm we came back from the safari and we needed to go to our room to change our clothes before dinner (by then it was cold) but the staff told us that the return to the room was not planned and that they had some blankets for us for dinner. We asked again and then we could go 5 minutes to the room between safari and dinner. Staff is friendly but hasty. Good lunch and dinner but lack of choice and not abundant portions. Poor breakfast. Funny safari but a bit hasty, few explanations and little involvment of participants. Unfortunately we did not find the boasted luxury; the payed price is absolutely not in line with the offer.

Stealing Money from a Patient in a Hospital Bed

For my 30th birthday, my girlfriend and I had planned (through an agency) a trip to Kruger. We booked well in advance in October at two lodges (one being Hoyo Hoyo).

We were set to arrive to Hoyo Hoyo on Thursday the 11th January, and were really excited however on Friday the 5th of January, my personal health took a surprising turn and I had to be hospitalised. (Please note that I am writing this on Wednesday 10th January from my hospital bed).

My girlfriend already stressed with my health contacted the agency we booked through to ask if we could postpone our trip due to the extreme unforseen cirumstance.

One lodge was very sympathetic to us, stating it would be fine for us to delay our trip for up to 6 months until I was in a better state to travel.

Hoyo Hoyo however refused. They refused to allow us to delay our trip, or give us any of the money we had already paid (we had paid the full cost of our two nights, game drives, and food before even going to the hotel).

They have 0 empathy, or sympathy it is clear they care about their clients, up until the money is in their pockets.

They stated that if you need to make alterations, or cancellations to your booking within 30days (or less) of your trip they are under no obligation to help or accomodate this, which in our case they made clear they would never do.

When my girlfirend and I do eventually travel to Kruger for my birthday we will make sure to go nowhere near this Lodge, we will recommend our friends to stay as far away from it as possible, and we have spoken to the agency we went through who has promised they will now go through other hotels due to the sever lack of compassion Hoyo Hoyo has shown us.

I hope this review will deter anyone from going there, there are so many other brilliant lodges to stay at in the park where we have stayed in the past (or the one who allowed us to delay for 6 months), but this is not one of those.

Once again Hoyo, thank you for reminding me that there are people and business' out there who have no empathy or compassion for other people, and who only care about taking your money. If you are reading this I hope you realise that you have stolen money from somebody currently lying in a hospital bed, hooked up to machines, and that you guys can live with that.

Edit, nothing false here I stated that I did not go to your lodge. I am complaining about your poor customer service and total lack of empathy for my situation that made us have to cancel. The only alternative you gave us was to travel to your lodge with malaria (and in effect risk all the other guests there). The alternative was to cancel my trip with no refund, or not show up at all with no refund. We asked if we could delay our trip and you stated this was out of the question, even though the other lodge we were booked to stay at were absolutely fine with it.

Nothing I said...

My wife has never been to the Kruger National Park so I decided to treat her to a 5-star Lodge experience for her very special birthday celebration.

After lots of research and reading all reviews, we decided to stay at the Hoyo Hoyo 5-star Safari Lodge for 3 nights and at the Imbali 5-star Safari Lodge for 2 nights.

HOYO HOYA The Cost per person per day was R 7 471 and included accommodation, all meals, local beverages and 2 x Safari drives per day.

ACCOMMODATION The accommodation was rustic and private in a bungalow type of suite that was comfortable but the whole Lodge was definitely in need of attention as it started to look shabby in places.

There was no minibar and also no expresso machine in our suites which we believe should have been standard, especially for the price we paid.

In our experience, Minibars and “Nespresso type” coffee machines are standard in 5-star establishments in both South Africa and globally.

CUISINE The food was acceptable but certainly not on par with 5-star establishments.

It was advertised and confirmed that our package included all local beverages (including alcohol).

We were disappointed that we had to pay extra for South African medium-graded red wines such as Beyserskloof Pinotage 2021 and Kleine Zalze 2019 and only Du Toitskloof and Douglas Green Red wines were offered as part of the “local beverages” wines. These wines only cost between R 60 and R 80 per bottle in liquor stores. SHAME ON YOU!

Rather offer good wines and limit them to 1 bottle per person/couple per day.

SAFARI DRIVES They were well organised with good rangers and comfortable vehicles although the sitings were not as good as I have seen when driving on the tar roads before.

WELLNESS TREATMENT We booked treatments well in advance and requested that both my wife and I are treated at the same time, and all was confirmed.

We were surprised that there was only 1 therapist so we had to receive treatments one after the other and had to rush to make the afternoon game drive on time.

The therapist also wanted to treat us in our room which we declined and requested to be treated in a separate space that she then accepted.

The treatment was very basic and not up to par compared to standard wellness centres that we often visit

SERVICE The staff that served us at Hoyo Hoyo were Talani, Given, Ezekiel and Ralph were very friendly and provided good service at all times,.

THANK YOU AGAIN, GUYS! You are an asset to Hoya Hoya.

CONCLUSION Given our experience, Hoyo Hoyo does not offer good Value for Money as we have stayed at many other 4 and 5-star Lodges that offer much better value for money.

We give Hoya Hoya 3.5...
