Motswari claims to be a 4* lodge, at best they are a 2* lodge. The value for money is lacking here. If you know what a quality lodge is supposed to be you will leave disappointed in this one, spend your money elsewhere.

Food – 1/5 – When you go to the bush you expect to have a variety of well-cooked meats with good presentation and sides that cater to most people. They failed to deliver quality dinners and you leave meals feeling dissatisfied and hungry. It appears the chef is attempting to replicate high end European menus, but every dish fell short. The breakfast was decent and the to order egg bar was the saving grace of all the food at this lodge.

Lodging – 3/5 – The rooms are rustic and beautiful. The rooms did feel very dated however and it seems like the furniture and decorations are nearing the end of their service life.

Overall Lodge –2/5 The lodge is laid out nicely, has a great boma and a few areas for hanging out. None of the areas were inviting and most of the areas appear not to be used anymore. The lodge looks like it used to be full of life but there is an overwhelming feeling of those days being long in the past. The swimming pool does have a nice view.

Lodge Staff – 2/5 The office staff are very friendly and try to find an answer to every concern you may have. The maintenance and housekeeping staff begrudgingly say hello to you when you walk past. It is obvious that being friendly is mandated rather than natural. The service staff make you feel like you are an inconvenience to them if you ask for a drink. The service at dinner is lacking and a lot of the time you have to get up and walk to the bar if you want a refill on your wine or other beverage.

Location – 3/5 The location is decent and has the big 5. It is quite densely populated by mopani and marula trees so if large herds of plains game are what you want this is not the best area. The area is quite good for leopards. There are smaller numbers of game and less variety than in other areas.

Game drives – 2/5 The game drives should be the highlight of any bush trip and Motswari fails to live up to that expectation. They stick to the same few roads where you end up recognizing the same few sets of animals very quickly. The drives were also at the wrong time so there was very little activity to be seen. The morning drive left far too late so you just drive around in the heat once all the game has settled down and the evening drive is the opposite, and you return just as the game is starting to emerge. If drives are important to you, you should avoid Motswari.

Rangers/guides – 1/5 We had a terrible experience with guides. My wife told our guide Eric that her favorite animals were hyenas, he spent the next 3 days telling her how stupid they are and how he wont go take her to find any because he hates them. After we complained about this, we were shuffled to a new guide who was still learning, he then had to go work at a different lodge so we were handed off to a 3rd guide who was at least decent with communication but just wasn’t a very good guide when it came to game knowledge or spotting. They do have “trackers” on their vehicles, but this is certainly just for image as they do not actually do any tracking.

Safari walk – 0/5 I asked for this experience for 3 days, they came up with excuses as to why they can’t do it. Then I finally got management involved and they organized one the next day. The website says their safari walk covers 5-6km and can go up to 3 hours. After scaring one guest out of walking by lying about the dangers, we walked out about 200 meters from the lodge and the guide talked about 2 types of droppings, a marula tree and a termite mound. When we returned I asked if they would do a real one and the one guide gave me a serious attitude and said too many people die on these things so they won’t do a real one.

Giraffe’s nest – 4/5 – Great experience, amazing to sleep under the stars. The dinner they served was already cold and we ate an hour and a half earlier than everyone else and there were ants...

Motswari Private Game Lodge Never again!!!!! Visited from 12 to 16 September 2019 (4 nights). Overvalued, far too expensive, absolutely not worth the money (a stay in Motswari sets you back for €700 per night for 2 people!!). Price quality ratio is totally out of balance.

In detail: Our cottage (Leopard) was surrounded by a palisade which left no view at all. The "outdoor shower", which was located between the two structures of our cottage, was actually an indoor shower without a roof. No view but walls from there... The view over the "river" from the pool as shown in the pictures on the website is simply a view over a dry dusty river bed. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served buffet style.

The game drives: Yes, we have seen the big five, and yes, we have seen wild dogs. But…. we also drove 3 (three!) game drives in a row to the same place where lions had killed a giraffe, what a poverty... In fact, only four of the eight game drives were worthwhile, the other four we saw mainly dry/dead trees along the paths and almost no animals. As sad highlights of the four bad game drives we stopped at African hares a number of times, about which the ranger gave an extensive explanation. What a poverty... Also two game drives a good number of kilometers were driven over the asphalt road which leads from the Timbavati Gate to the lodge. What a poverty...

An advice from my side: Do not spend your money in Motswari for there are lodges in private game reserves quite nearby where you spend less than half the money of Motswari. In these lodges the quality of the stay, the food, the game drives and the surrounding game resserve are many times better than in Motswari. If you choose one of those, you’ll save a lot of money or, you can stay there at least twice as long for the same money you spend in Motswari. Fortunately we visited two of these lodges after our debacle in Motswari. In those lodges the price/quality ratio was over 100%.

5*s doesn’t begin to do Motswari justice. Such an incredible place. it was simply the most perfect 3 nights. Before anything else we have to give credit to every staff member, incredibly welcoming, friendly and kind. It goes without saying our driver and tracker , Megan and Lot went so much further than above and beyond I can’t put it into words. Not only are they a credit to the business but they have such a passion for the animals, the nature and genuinely making people happy. They helped create one of the most magical moments of my life and every single time we speak about it- their names come up for making it happen. Thank you Megan and Lot. The reserve setting itself is stunning, completely open with animals able to roam free in their own home. The privacy of the bungalows is amazing, we felt we could be as involved or relaxed we we wanted to be. Insanely comfortable beds, so much space, stunning bathroom and a cheeky out door shower. The food was excellent every single meal choice with so much variety flavour and love going into every dish. They were also so accommodating for dietary requirements. The drives were spectacular and the freedom the drivers had to take you around really surprised me., we got so close to the animals whilst still respecting their boundaries. It was truley breath taking. We saw so much but I won’t do any spoilers- my partner had done a Safari previously and he said you can’t even compare how much better Motswari is. Top tips: 1. Take a light layer for morning and end of evening drives, each jeep has blankets and ponchos so no need to take up more suitcase space 2. Don’t forget to pack a swimsuit, there’s a “watering hole “ pool in the complex which is lovely to sit beside and enjoy a Savannah beer inbetween the drives 3. repellent is essential but they also provide a moisturiser with repellent in it in the room, it worked fantastically I wish I could have kept it! 4. Electricity can be temperamental so take a portable charger for your phones and top it up as often as you can as sometimes there’s long spells without electric (this is the government NOT the lodge and never affected any game drive or meal) 5. Water and a coffe / juice in morning and something stronger in the evening drives is provided so you never have to think about anything- their attention to detail on the little things really shows 6. Speak to your drivers!! We loved learning from Megan and all her knowledge and personal stories! Also her and Lot went out of their way to find the animals we wanted to see the most! 7. When you first arrive at Kruger gates, it’s about a 40 min drive to the lodge- DONT FALL ASLEEP. We did and every other guest told us about all the animals they saw on the way! We then saw so many on our way to the airport at silly AM and it was magical as the sun was rising. PRACTICAL FOR WHEN YOU ARE BOOKING: The lodge and national park close in the evenings so if you have a late flight you cannot enter after 10pm or leave before 8am so you will have to stay overnight near the airport- it’s just worth factoring in. To all the staff, behind the bar, in the kitchen, providing service and of course Megan and Lot- thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Holiday of a lifetime x

An Unforgettable African Dream Motswari Game Reserve isn't just a safari destination; it's an immersive journey into the heart of the African bushveld. From the moment you arrive, you're enveloped in a sense of tranquility and raw natural beauty that stays with you long after you've left. Nestled within the renowned Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, which shares an unfenced border with the Kruger National Park, Motswari offers an authentic and intimate safari experience unlike any other. Wildlife Encounters Beyond Expectation The game viewing at Motswari is simply phenomenal. Thanks to its prime location within the Greater Kruger ecosystem, the reserve boasts an incredible diversity of wildlife. During our stay in March 2025, our expert guide and tracker ensured that every game drive was an adventure. We were fortunate enough to witness the "Big Five" – lions, leopards, elephants, rhinoceros, and buffalo – on multiple occasions, often in breathtakingly close proximity. * Lions: We observed several prides, including playful cubs and majestic males basking in the sun. The guides' knowledge of their territories and behavior was truly impressive. * Leopards: Known for their elusive nature, we were thrilled to have multiple leopard sightings, including one gracefully draped in a tree at dusk. * Elephants: Herds of elephants, from tiny calves to massive matriarchs, were a common and delightful sight, often seen drinking at waterholes. * Rhinos: Both white and black rhinos made appearances, a testament to the reserve's successful conservation efforts. * Buffalo: Large herds of Cape buffalo roamed the plains, their sheer numbers a powerful spectacle. Beyond the Big Five, Motswari teems with other fascinating creatures. We encountered giraffes gracefully reaching for acacia leaves, zebras grazing in the open savannah, various antelope species like kudu and impala, and even a sighting of the endangered African wild dogs. Birdwatchers will be in paradise, with approximately 400 species found in the area. The guides are adept at spotting even the smallest and most camouflaged birds. The night game drives were a particular highlight, offering a glimpse into the nocturnal world. Equipped with spotlights, we searched for creatures that come alive after dark, such as hyenas, civets, and bushbabies. The thrill of encountering a leopard on a night hunt is an experience I won't soon forget.

Motswari is the best way to explore Kruger for a first time visitor. My husband and I visited the last week of August 2022 and stayed at Gieger’s. Our guide was Wesley, our tracker was Jacky. Antoni was our host, and Grace our chef. We said it a few times, but even if the weather was horrible and we saw no animals, that we’d come back for Grace’s food and Anthony’s hospitality alone. Antoni was a gracious host. His wine recommendations were spot on, and some of my new favorites. He’s studying to become a sommelier, and we are so curious to follow his life after we leave! Grace’s food is some of the best I’ve had, and I’m a food writer for global publications. The global versatility of her mastery and her repurpose of a once weekly delivery of staples was what impressed me most. Wesley and Jacky were so knowledgeable that I tried to ask questions seeing if I’d be able to stump them - and I couldn’t. We learned more in 4 days than we could have learned in four years. And, their stories could fill a best seller (Wesley, If you’re reading this - call me. I’ll ghost write it for you). We stayed for five nights and four days. We saw all big 5 by the end of our second day. I’d recommend a day less, and visiting in June/July or April. We stayed in the Giraffe’s nest our last night, which was an adventure all on its own. We so badly want to know what happens to the animals we were following. But more so, It really was so, that we came visitors and left friends. We want to know what happens and wish our new friends fulfilling adventures of their own. And if any of them should pass through Chicago, I’d love to have them over for dinner and wine - and to host them with the same level of hospitality that they showed us. We loved Motswari, and it was really the gem of our time in South Africa. We can’t wait to bring our family there in the future. A
