We cannot recommend this venue based on our experience. It is effectively a fairly isolated backpacker/communal living set-up in one house with bedrooms along one passage and shared kitchen/lounge and dining room facilities, all of which are in very close proximity. As such, the success of your stay is largely dependent on the other guests. We had no prior reason to expect that we would be the sole couple staying at a truck stop for five trucks. The guys did nothing wrong but a group of guys enjoying themselves around a braai until after midnight and a couple there to enjoy a relaxing farmhouse experience do not go hand in hand, particularly in close quarters. On our arrival, Tim, who does not seem to stay on site, simply checked we were the couple booked for the night and confirmed that we had paid in full in advance, then disappeared. He has subsequently just ignored our communication. We feel that he could and should have warned us at the time that we would be the only other guests in a truck stop, which would have given us the opportunity to make more suitable alternative accommodation arrangements before dark while we still had the time to do so. It was an unpleasant experience that we would not wish on any others. Unless you are travelling in a large group of adults, we would suggest that you do not take the risk and rather...
Read moreThis was a very strange experience...Leonista tequila creates the impression that this is the place where their tequila is made. Turns out, the farm supplies agave to Leonista and the actual tequila is distilled in Ventersdorp of all places...but back to the farm...we expected a tequila tasting experience, complete with tasting room, distillery etc. and what we found was a farm house turned into a guest house with a housekeeper. She kindly phoned the owner who rushed over to explain that he only supplies the agave to Leonista, and also markets his own tequila (you guessed it, made in Ventersdorp). He was super nice and the history of how the agave came to the farm very interesting. His tequila (3 Agave) is named for the 3 plants transported in his great-great-grandmother's knapsack to the farm. So in short, you can book a farm visit and learn more about agave but this needs to be booked well in advance and this is not the Leonista...
Read moreRoodebloem farmhouse is a quaint, very old farmhouse where you share the house with other guests. Each room has its own bathroom with a shower. Our room had air-conditioning as well. The shared amenities are nothing fancy. All old school, authentic and ample, which is great isn't it? The yard has a shaded area with picnic tables etc, which were used and enjoyed with sundowners with an exceptional view of the hillside illuminated by the setting sun. For the first guests to arrive, there are only 2 garages and the rest need to park under the sun and stars. The dirt road to the house was fair, but take it very slow with low cars.
This was a great spot with nothing lacking and a nostalgic feel to it. The view of the hillside kept me captivated for longer than I would...
