I would not recommend this hiking trail. We wanted to do the yellow trail. First of all, it is really poorly marked. We managed to stay close to the trail somehow using the map, but for less experienced hikers I guess this can be quite frustrating. But what was even worse: at some point the trail crosses a small river, which was not possible to cross when we did the hike because there was too much water and no bridge or anything similar! I tried to cross the water anyhow, but by doing so I almost stepped on a rinkhals snake on the riverside. Luckily I wore thick hiking shoes and the snake was relaxed and didn’t attack me. This could have ended much worse, since these snakes are highly dangerous. The river also had a strong current and really was not crossable, especially after the snake encounter, so we had to return. I understand that nature is unpredictable, but if you make a fence around it and advertise a trail that you charge with 80rand per person, I would expect that you make sure that this trail is doable at least. We also tried the red trail afterwards, but same story, at some point we came to the same river which could not be crossed. This was very...
Read moreThis is such a fun hike to do! We did the 13km route and it's a moderate, partially flat hike. There are a few steep climbs up and down, but everything is very doable.
I saw a lot of reviews stating that the first few K's of the trail is not clearly marked, we found the contrary. The owner showed us the first major turn on the route, and after that everything else was clearly marked, except for a km or 2 at the end.
The waterfalls and rock pools are absolutely breathtaking and we spent quite some time there.
We saw a lot of game as well.
A few things:
You need to phone the owner just to confirm that you'll be coming through for the hike.
Cost: R80p/p cash
Please remember water! More or less 1.5L per person.
We did the hike in August and it was incredibly windy and mostly overcast, but sunscreen is definitely still needed!
NB!!! If you drive a non-offroad vehicle, it's advisable to use the road furthest from Dullstroom (not the road leading to Millstream Farm). The Millstream Farm road is a very bad gravel road. 7km towards Belfast on the R540 there's another road that will take...
Read moreThis was a magnificent experience. Honestly if this had to be my back yard my life would be made. So natural and untouched.
The owner of the farm had to help me find my car keys that I lost in this wilderness. He looked at photos as to where I could’ve lost them, and knew exactly where to go look. That’s how well he knows his own farm. Most wonderful caring people I have ever had the pleasure to meet.
This hiking spot was totally amazing! Will recommend to...
