Greeff Cottages — Hotel in George

I don't often rate, in fact I cannot remember ever rating, an establishment 5 stars but in the case of Greeff cottages it would be an injustice to give them any lesser of a rating.

The cottage itself is comfortable, has everything you want and need and then some so as accommodation it is great.

But the difference comes in with the hosts. Elzette was always ready with suggestions and recommendations including talking me out of doing the "adventure" tour in the Cango Caves (stupid idea at my age) to directing me to some great restaurants in Oudtshoorn but the best was her very own ostrich fillet which was as good as all and much better than most that I have eaten. It was a little disconcerting eating an ostrich fillet while it's brother was watching me but I soon got over that.

And then there was the introduction to ostrich farming from Morne ... none of this take a feeding bucket and hold it in front of a bird. We were in the camp surrounded and shoulder charged by a whole flock (or herd or bunch or whatever a lot of ostriches are called) and was introduced to the fascinating world of an ostrich farmer. And no, I don't want to give up my day job ...

If you are planning a visit to the Oudtshoorn area I completely recommend you stay at Elzette and Morne. You will not be...

So, you come to Oudtshoorn and of course you want to see ostriches. Now you have two options. Either you go to one of the big farms with 200 other tourists and hold your bucket out of a tractor. OR: You come here to Elzette and Mourné and experience the real life on a family ostrich farm, hold and pet a baby ostrich and have lovely conversations while dining with the whole family. Mourné shows you the farm and grills a delicious steak for dinner. Elzette then finishes off the evening with a delicious traditional Malva cake and custard. Full...

We received a very warm welcome from Elzette and Mourne and immediately felt very comfortable. We were shown around the farm and got a lots of informations. The dinner was very good and we had lots of great and interesting conversations. Unfortunately we were only there for one night but we would come back anytime.
