Firstly we read the positive Trip Advisor reviews before booking. We booked and we were not dissapointed. The general surrounding area is slightly dilapidated and not much to offer other than the Debonnaires and Wimpy at the Engen garage as you enter Mkuze. There is a police station close by so we felt safe...
Close to GMI the area is quite and not busy. Entering GMI you are welcomed by professional security, concierge service, and reception. The facility is in good condition as well as the revamped rooms with air conditioning.
We loved the most spoken about gardens, the pier at the back leading to the river lookout post, the boat ride on the Jozini/Pongola dam with Jean the skipper, enjoying the sun at the bar, the great breakfast, and kids enjoyed the swings and kids tv channels, as well as the colouring and modelling activities. Unfortunately they couldn't swim as the water was slightly cloudy and yhe weather was not so great. I was amazed by the sizes of the millipedes and snails in the garden - amazing. I was extremely happy with the WiFi - no hassles nor passwords. Click and you connected - WiFi speed was acceptible.
We also enjoyed eating dinner and breakfast at the main restaurant - the atmosphere was great and relaxing. The following staff gave us a great personal service and we apprecite that a lot - Bhekisisa (star), Roy, Jean, and the rest of the ladies in the main restaurant. Lounging at the front foyer couches was great too. The general pricing of food and beverages is acceptable.
The spa treatments are unfortunately expensive, as well as the game drives. Please consider board games for guests whilst they enjoying the great garden - like scrabble/chess/draught/monopoly/ etc.. Room cleaning staff to pay more attention to cleaning under the beds, tea area, and patio - these were not cleaned properly and we couldn't enjoy the room patio. Please increase the dinner ala carte menu variety - limited.
Thanks Team GMI - we would definitely recommend GMI for a stay in...
Read moreWhat a truly delightful stay at The Ghost Mountain Inn. After 2 nights I really didn't want to leave. I noticed they had put the Australian flag out for us on their poles out the front of the property. I asked about this and it was no accident - this level of attention to detail was such a nice touch.
We were welcomed back from each trip with hot face washers. On arrival we received welcome drinks of juice served in champagne flutes.
The dining was outstanding. The dinner buffet had an epic spread of salads, vegetables, curries, pasta and a meat carvery with the meat changing each night. Our breakfast boxes for the game drive were nicely prepared based on our preferences. The buffet breakfast was plentiful and the egg station attendant made me an omelette with the lot that could have fed a small family!
The cafe/bar light lunch options were very reasonably priced. Only R42 for a bottle of cider. There is a small gift shop on site, selling souvenirs and ice creams and cold drinks.
The rooms were large, great wifi, hot water and air con. Comfortable bed.
I wanted to call out two staff members in particular for their excellent service. Rohisha at the front desk who helped organise last minute tours for members of our group and helped me out with a number of requests. Sabelo who took us to the Zulu homestead, mixed us perfect gin and tonics with a view of the dam and took us for our game drive at Mkuze Reserve. He had an excellent knowledge of the animals especially in identifying the birds.
There is also a boardwalk that leads to a pontoon on the lake which is excellent for bird watching at dawn and dusk. Pools are not heated so a bit nippy at this time of year.
I loved the interior decoration of all the common areas. I cannot...
